About The Position

Provide crisis counseling and psychoeducation to physically and sexually abused or neglected children and their families including case management, as part of the multidisciplinary child protection team. This role involves accepting and triaging referrals, conducting crisis assessments (including suicide risk), evaluating patient status, completing social histories and psychosocial assessments, and triaging patients to appropriate services. The position also requires intervening with parents/caretakers, assessing parenting skills, participating in the hospital on-call system for crisis intervention, educating staff on psychosocial issues, and utilizing a theoretical framework for crisis intervention. The social worker will encourage positive communication among family members, recognize progress towards treatment goals, and complete medical record documentation promptly. They must remain knowledgeable about community resources and communicate with outside agencies to ensure continuity of care.

Requirements

Master's degree in social work
3 years of working with child and families
Must have a high energy level and commitment to social welfare and child health advocacy issues.
Must demonstrate clinical skill in individual and family crisis intervention.
Must be available to law enforcement agencies for consultation and expert testimony
Must be able to demonstrate appropriate use of hospital and community resources on behalf of children and their families.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.
Ability to relate to diverse patient populations.
Ability to work in highly emotionally charged situations.
Experience with and ability to interact and collaborate in a multi-systems network including law enforcement, judicial, social services, mental health and medical.
Requires trauma informed skills, knowledge and experience in crisis intervention.
Must have knowledge of acute psychiatric intervention, child maltreatment and protective services.
Must be able to assess the mental health status of the child, growth and developmental needs of the child, identify criteria for clinical judgment or decision making to protect the child and reduce impact of abusive behavior.

Responsibilities

Provide crisis counseling and psychoeducation to physically and sexually abused or neglected children and their families.
Perform case management as part of the multidisciplinary child protection team.
Accept and triage referrals, and conduct crisis assessments, including assessing for suicide risk.
Evaluate patient status, including assessing for suicidality/homicidality.
Complete social histories and psychosocial assessments for the medical record.
Appropriately triage patients to correct services.
Interview family members for assessment and intervention plan development.
Complete required assessment documents clearly, concisely, and in a timely manner.
Remain knowledgeable about community resources/placements for children and families.
Communicate with outside agencies on behalf of the patient.
Intervene directly with parents and/or caretakers, assessing parenting skills and areas of strength and conflict.
Participate in the hospital on-call system, including weekday on-call and afterhours back-up.
Educate staff about psychosocial issues impacting patients.
Utilize a theoretical framework for crisis intervention.
Encourage positive communication among family members.
Recognize progress and obstacles towards treatment goals and appropriately intervene.
Complete medical record documentation, statistical and other reports promptly and efficiently.
Participate in professional development and community education activities.
Attend team, staff, and divisional meetings and participate in clinical case presentations.
Be available to law enforcement agencies for consultation and expert testimony.
