About The Position

The Peckham Self-Advocacy Team (PSAT) Intern will assist the PSAT Coordinator in self-advocacy programming that supports PSAT team members in their skill development, relationship building, and self-advocacy efforts with community partners, service providers, elected officials, and government agencies. This internship is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in disability advocacy and to engage with diverse communities. This position requires 25 hours per week.

Requirements

Currently pursuing a degree in Social Sciences or a related field
Self-driven and able to take initiative in an independent work environment
Comfortable working with people of all abilities, cultures and ages
Interest in disability advocacy
Excellent communication skills
Experience with Microsoft Office

Responsibilities

Assist PSAT Coordinator with development of a learning program focused on self-advocacy, leadership, and storytelling
Support opportunities for PSAT team members to learn to tell personal stories and make requests of community partners, government agencies and elected officials
Attend and support monthly PSAT meetings
Attend and support monthly PSAT President/VP meetings
Support individual PSAT team members to develop self-advocacy goals
Support training opportunities at specific locations based on individual PSAT needs/requests
Support resource fairs for self-advocates to provide information and education on issues that are of interest to them, including health care, housing, and transportation
Support a safe, non-judgmental environment for self-advocates to learn and express themselves.
The PSAT Intern must be able to support PSAT team members’ individual goals and objectives and not influence PSAT team members with personal political views.
Promote Peckham’s vision, values, and services to all customers and stakeholders
Assist in maintaining organization wide quality standards
Maintain a safe and clean work environment
Other related duties as assigned
