About The Position

The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) conducts criminal prosecutions under the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act and provincial statute offences, and works with justice system stakeholders and the community at large to promote safe communities and implement alternative approaches to the administration of justice. The Advanced Projects and Traffic Office (APTO) is a branch within the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) that is responsible for the prosecution of provincial statute offences. The Provincial Prosecutor is responsible for prosecuting provincial offences before the Alberta Court of Justice, ensuring adherence to applicable statutes, regulations, and the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) Guidelines, Protocols, and Policies.

Requirements

University graduation in a related field such as Criminology, Law, Public Administration and/or Social Sciences
4 years of progressively responsible related experience working with the Justice System in some capacity, for example as Paralegal, in Policing, or as a Provincial Prosecutor.
Valid Drivers License

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of the Alberta Rules of Court, Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Provincial Offences Procedures Act, the Traffic Safety Act and other provincial statutes.
Experience using, or knowledge of, Registries Online Access Delivery System (ROADS), Justice Online Information Network (JOIN), TTDS and any other GoA digital platform.

Responsibilities

Representing the Attorney General in trials, pre-trial conferences, sentencing hearings, and other court proceedings while ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, policies, and procedures.
Screening and assessing cases involving adult and youth defendants to determine charge appropriateness, public interest considerations, and the reasonable likelihood of conviction.
Preparing and presenting prosecution cases by analyzing legal and factual issues, assessing evidence, preparing witnesses, and delivering oral and written submissions.
Developing and implementing prosecution strategies that balance legal, policy, and public interest considerations while anticipating and responding to defence arguments.
Managing disclosure obligations and negotiating resolutions with law enforcement, defence counsel, agents, and self-represented defendants.
Contributing to the continuous improvement of prosecution practices, policies, and procedures affecting provincial offence prosecutions across Alberta.
