About The Position

The Prototype Machinist is a unique opportunity for an individual with some machining experience to excel in an environment that promotes autonomy, learning, innovation, collaboration, curiosity, trust, and an overall desire to succeed. In this role you will be responsible for working with the team to machine custom surgical instruments in low quantities in a highly technical environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; vocational training in precision machining highly desirable.
  • Basic foundations of precision and CNC machining.
  • Hands-on foundational experience operating manual machine shop equipment and/or ProtoTRAK Lathe
  • Ability to independently determine machining sequence for complex parts.
  • Understanding of mechanical drawing, dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Proficient in measurement tool usage (micrometer, caliper, comparator, height gauge, etc.)
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting ability.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced prototype/development environment.
  • Effective communication with engineers and quality personnel.
  • Detail oriented, meticulous and focus on quality.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Positive attitude with a strong desire to learn and accept mentorship

Responsibilities

  • Work from technical drawings and solid models to produce a variety of complex prototype and production components using manual mills and lathes.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and 3D models to determine machining strategy.
  • Perform program edits at the machine and/or develop CNC programs using conversational programming or G-code.
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, speeds, and feeds for complex materials.
  • Manufacture tight-tolerance components in low-volume or one-off configurations.
  • Identify potential design or tolerance concerns and communicate proactively with Engineering.
  • Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring equipment (micrometers, bore gauges, indicators, height gauges, etc.).
  • Assist in developing and documenting repeatable processes for transition to production.
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized work area in accordance with safety standards.
