About The Position

The Instrument Design and Fabrication Core Facility is an ASU Knowledge Enterprise Core Facility. The Instrument shop is an ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D certified facility and is seeking to fill a Prototype Machinist Sr. position. Under shop management direction, you will contribute to the optimal, efficient, and safe operation of multiple shop equipment. This position requires hands on work in a prototype environment working from concept designs to machine component(s) and assemblies. Design review, machining and inspection of components are a major part of this position’s responsibilities. This position supports all ASU professors and research scientists along with peer institution specialized projects. Knowledge of quality assurance/control (QA)(QC) processes including CMM equipment/procedures and final inspection reports. Use CAD programs to prepare drawings and to generate programs for CNC equipment. Prepares estimates for submitted jobs including labor, material requisitions, supplies and tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties and use office equipment including a desktop computer.

Nice To Haves

  • Twelve years of experience in the design, fabrication, modification and repair of high precision, mechanical instrument and assemblies, including four years of instrument design experience, four years CAD/CAM software and three-dimensional drawings experience, and four years of CNC machine programming; OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Highly knowledgeable in the design and fabrication of high-precision mechanical instruments and assemblies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of non-destructive testing, a variety of material properties, including experience with several different metals, plastics, and machinable ceramics.
  • Skilled in applying QA/QC methods and operating quality control inspection equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of industrial safety practices and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, assemble, and test highly technical research equipment, laboratory instruments, and machine mechanisms.
  • Manufacture necessary fixtures, tooling, and holding jigs for instrument fabrication.
  • Set up, program, and operate manual machine tools alongside CNC lathes and 2.5 to 5-axis CNC mills.
  • Consult with faculty, engineering teams, and research partners to establish design parameters and advise on manufacturing feasibility.
  • Read and interpret hand-drawn sketches, CAD prints, and blueprints. Develop or modify finished drawings based on instructions and calculations.
  • Inspect assigned work and perform in-process part inspections using manual measurement tools to verify tolerance and QA/QC compliance.
  • Perform routine maintenance and in-house repairs on toolroom machinery and support equipment.
  • Maintain the required level of laboratory safety training to perform routine duties.
  • Work full-time hours from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
