Purpose of the Position Responsible for programming, set-up, and operation of CNC machines in compliance with inch and metric drawing specifications. Possess the ability operating and performing set ups on both vertical and horizontal milling machines as well as multi-axis mills and lathes. Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of all measuring tools and devices used in inspection of all components. Works under general supervision. Although the location of the position is in Sterling, VA, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in a CNC machining environment
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a CNC programming role (GibbsCAM preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with specialty prototype machining
  • High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience
  • Experience with Okuma, Mazak, Haas, and Fadal controls.
  • Proficient with manual programming (G codes/M codes).
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design and dimensioning principles which includes reading blueprints and geometric tolerance comprehension.
  • Understands material properties (rates of expansion, strength, hardness) and special machining requirements.
  • Proficient computer skills are required.
  • Strong ability to work well in a group atmosphere and comply with high quality standards.
  • Strong ability to shift from one task to another to address changing priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • CNC certification or CNC Trade School, a major plus
  • Knowledge of Lean Principles including “Just in Time”, and Setup Time Reduction a plus

Responsibilities

  • Independently programs highly complex and unique prototype work pieces on 4+ axis equipment using GibbsCAM, optimizing machining strategies for efficiency and quality.
  • Leads advanced set ups and troubleshooting on both Vertical and Horizontal CNC Milling Machines (3 & 4 axis).
  • Machines and/or fabricating precision tools and fixturing to tight tolerances and complex geometries based on specifications, often requiring innovative solutions for one-off prototype projects.
  • Measures, inspects, and troubleshoots dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.
  • Leads documentation creation, revision, and process improvements for prototype projects.
  • Performs periodic machine maintenance such as, but not limited to dismantling or partly dismantling machines and performing repairs that mainly involve the use of hand tools in scraping and fitting parts.
  • Comply with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areas.
  • Mentors and trains Level I machinists, sharing expertise to improve team capabilities.
  • Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
