About The Position

Leidos’ Defense Systems Mechanical Manufacturing Facility is seeking a Prototype CNC Machinist to join our aerospace manufacturing team. This position is ideal for a self-motivated machinist who thrives in a prototype and production environment where every part is critical. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing precision components from engineering drawings while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and workmanship. Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED with 5+ years of CNC machining experience with mills and/or lathes.
  • Experience producing prototype or low-volume precision components.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint interpretation.
  • Ability to independently perform complete machine setups.
  • Experience with tight-tolerance machining (±0.001” or better).
  • Proficient with precision measuring equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Be a flexible team player and participate with problem solving and continuous improvements.
  • Adhere to AS9100 and other quality standards.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must be a US Citizen and possess (and be able to maintain) a Final Secret Clearance OR meet the eligibility to obtain (and maintain) a Secret Clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Aerospace or defense manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with 4-axis and/or 5-axis machining.
  • Familiarity with Siemens, Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, or DMG MORI controls.
  • Experience machining exotic aerospace materials.
  • Basic understanding of CAM software and G-code editing.
  • Ability to inspect first articles and support root cause investigations.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC mills and lathes to manufacture complex prototype aerospace components.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, CAD models, and process documentation.
  • Perform complete machine setups including tooling selection, work holding, and program verification.
  • Edit/write CNC programs at the machine as needed to optimize machining processes.
  • Machine a variety of materials including stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, Inconel, and other aerospace alloys.
  • Verify dimensions using precision inspection equipment including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, and indicators.
  • Work closely with manufacturing engineers, programmers, quality inspectors, and design engineers to solve machining challenges.
  • Identify opportunities to improve cycle times, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas while following all safety procedures.
  • Support urgent prototype schedules while maintaining exceptional quality standards.
