About The Position

We are looking for a Protection & Control Engineer-In-Training who supports the design, configuration, analysis, and implementation of protection and control systems for transmission and distribution assets. Working under the guidance of a Professional Engineer, this role contributes to relay settings development, protection coordination studies, disturbance analysis, commissioning activities, and regulatory compliance initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity to build technical expertise, gain hands-on experience with critical power system infrastructure, and support the safe, reliable delivery of electricity to our customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • Minimum 1 – 4 years’ experience
  • Foundational knowledge of power system protection and control principles, including relays, CTs/VTs, protection schemes, and associated equipment.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license with no more than 6 demerits and be able to attend site visits, testing activities, and field assignments as required.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with a willingness to learn and develop technical depth in protection and control engineering.
  • Strong attention to detail, sound technical judgment, and commitment to engineering quality, safety, and accuracy.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build working relationships with internal stakeholders, field staff, and external partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced engineering and project environment.

  • Must be legal to work in Canada and requires the successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Two professional references will be requested.
  • Applicants will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract (those with more than 6 demerits will not be considered) and must be able to meet ENMAX’s insurance requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with transmission and/or distribution utility systems and utility operating practices is an asset.
  • Learn and work with applicable engineering and protection tools such as CAPE, IPS/RELEX, CYME, Mathcad, SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista, and other systems used by ENMAX.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and review of protection and control designs, including schematics, logic diagrams, relay settings, and associated engineering calculations for transmission and distribution assets.
  • Assist in relay coordination studies, short-circuit analysis, protection system performance evaluations, and technical assessments using applicable engineering tools and methodologies.
  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables such as protection settings files, I/O lists, logic narratives, commissioning packages, technical reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Support event and disturbance analysis, including oscillography review, root-cause investigations, and corrective actions related to protection system performance and misoperations.
  • Participate in factory testing, field testing, commissioning, and validation activities for protection and control systems, and support resolution of technical issues identified during implementation.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, including Operations, Planning, Telecom, SCADA, asset management, and project teams, as well as external vendors and consultants, to support safe and timely project execution.
  • Ensure applicable ENMAX engineering standards, industry codes, AESO requirements, and NERC/Alberta Reliability Standards are considered and applied in engineering work products as directed by the supervising engineer.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and continuous improvement of protection and control standards, engineering practices, templates, databases, and workflows.
  • Support compliance activities related to Protection and Control reliability standards, including documentation, evidence development, settings-related technical review, and follow-up actions associated with standards such as PRC-001, PRC-002, PRC-004 and PRC-027.
  • Assist with maintaining the quality and accuracy of protection settings databases, asset records, and technical documentation used to support engineering, operations, and compliance processes.
  • Contribute to post-event reviews, misoperation analysis, lessons learned, and corrective actions to improve reliability and performance of protection systems.
  • Identify and support process improvements and communicate technical assumptions, risks, limitations, and recommendations to the supervising Professional Engineer in an organized and timely manner.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call program supporting operational response, incident management activities, and coordination with the System Control Centre during system events and abnormal operating conditions.
