About The Position

We are looking for a Protection and Control (P&C) Engineer to join our dynamic and fast-growing team. Our Protection and Control (P&C) Engineer design, implement, test, and maintain the systems that protect and control electrical power systems. In this role, you will also contribute contributing to other engineering areas including, power quality analysis, installation, startup, maintenance, and repair. What You’ll Do: Develop complete utility substation P&C engineering design packages, including AC one-line and three-line diagrams, DC schematics, logic and functional diagrams, panel layouts, interconnection diagrams, relaying equipment specifications and bill of materials. Design, specification, setting calculation, and coordination of protective relaying and relay control schemes for both electromechanical and modern electronic relays. Modeling, short circuit and overstressed breaker studies as well as the protective relaying recommendations for proposed generation interconnections to a client’s electrical system. Ensures all relay settings activities, initiatives, and processes are in conformance with the company’s established policies and objectives, with client design standards, and industry standards, including like those from IEEE, IEC, and NERC. Confidently and comfortably present technical solutions to key customers respond in real time to technical concerns and answer questions in a knowledgeable, articulate manner. Test protective relays, control devices, and communication links to ensure they function correctly before the systems go live. Analyze fault records and waveforms to determine the cause, assess the performance of the protection systems, and identify any misoperations. Prepare detailed documentation, including wiring diagrams, relay setting sheets, and control logic diagrams, to support maintenance and future upgrades. Implement automatic controls for switchgear, transformers, and other equipment to maintain system stability and optimize performance. Generate drawing packages and installation plans for electrical and substation equipment upgrades including protective relay replacements. Analyze power quality data and event capture data to determine cause of customer issue and provide recommendations for mitigation. Provide review of existing customer power systems and provide recommendations for improvement, upgrade, and/or expansion. Create written specifications for electrical and substation equipment such as motor control centers, switchboards, switchgear, transformers, and circuit breakers. Travel to jobsite as needed to meet with customers and collect data and to direct and support installation and commissioning activities. Assist sales team with project scope and estimates, including traveling to the jobsite as necessary. Must understand electrical system hazards and be able and willing to work safely around electrical equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in electrical engineering, a related field, or possesses additional years of extensive experience in a related discipline, providing a strong academic and practical foundation.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in electrical engineering or a closely related field, demonstrating expertise developing complete utility substation P&C engineering design packages.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems, wiring, and all necessary equipment.
  • Licensure and Certifications: NETA 2, 3, or 4; FE/EIT; PE preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Experience with SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, and/or other electrical modeling tools.
  • Experience with AutoCAD
  • Exhibits exceptional interpersonal skills, adept at building effective relationships and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to achieve project goals.
  • Demonstrates outstanding verbal and written communication skills, effectively conveying complex technical concepts to diverse audiences with clarity and precision.
  • Professional and persuasive communication skills when engaging with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring alignment and consensus on project objectives.
  • Ability to work remotely, with minimal supervision.
  • 10-15% travel required.
  • Ability to pass company drug and alcohol screening and background check.
  • Valid and current driver’s license.
  • 3–5 years of experience in substation protection and control design for utility or EPC projects
  • Working knowledge of relay settings, logic development, and familiarity with major relay manufacturers (e.g., SEL, GE, Siemens)
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or MicroStation, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe PDF markup tools
  • Strong ability to interpret substation drawings and specifications and perform basic system calculations (load, voltage drop, battery sizing)
  • Experience supporting projects through planning, design, and commissioning phases
  • Familiarity with SCADA and communications systems integration
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required
  • Must be willing to travel approximately 25% of the time, including overnight travel
  • Flexibility to work occasional overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed
