About The Position

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG), Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is seeking applicants for the position of Seasonal Protected Species Acoustic Monitoring Technician. This role is part of a project launched in February 2025 focused on using acoustic detections to understand the behavior and habitat use of North Atlantic right whales. The findings will inform fisheries management and vessel speed restrictions in local waters. The position is a seasonal contract role for 26 weeks, with a start date on or after June 1, 2026, and an end date of December 31, 2026. The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) aims to protect and enhance Massachusetts’ environmental resources and promote a clean energy future, with a commitment to environmental justice and inclusivity.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with marine mammal and sea turtles species in Massachusetts’ coastal waters.
  • Experience working at-sea including offshore.
  • Experience with computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work as a team and ask questions.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate field trips.
  • Availability outside of state holidays, including weekends, is required.
  • Ability to work in variable weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold environments.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds safely.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s Class D license or equivalent license from the state in which you reside.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the R programming language.
  • Familiarity with Raven Pro.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in deploying and retrieving passive acoustic monitoring equipment for regular servicing in June/July and Nov/Dec, as well as intermittent trips as needed.
  • Aid in data management as well as equipment maintenance and preparation.
  • Assist in analysis of acoustic monitoring data for the detection of large whales according to existing protocols.
  • Visually survey for marine mammals and sea turtles at-sea.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
