About The Position

(Chicago/Hybrid) The position of Prospect Research is to research and analyze information on current and prospective Fellowship donors and prepare detailed reports for development officers to assist in the cultivation of donors. This position reports directly to the Prospect Research & Budget Manager and is based in our Chicago headquarters. We are seeking an individual with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. A minimum of one to three years of experience as a prospect researcher within a non-profit organization, or comparable experience in non-profit development or a related field, is required. Demonstrated skills in all phases of donor research involving fee and non-fee Internet based research sources such as LexisNexis, DonorSearch, and Salesforce is preferred. Demonstrated analytical and investigative skills are preferred. Individuals with experience in biographical or genealogical research and or data management or demonstrated proficiency in a related field such as history, library science or genealogy is preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of one to three years of experience as a prospect researcher within a non-profit organization, or comparable experience in non-profit development or a related field, is required.
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Intermediate level proficiency in Internet research methodology.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to express self effectively and concisely.
  • Excellent customer service skills necessary to professionally and effectively interact with staff, management and donors.
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks or projects with competing deadlines.
  • Must be self-motivated, and proactive with the ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Knowledge of donor types and an understanding of fundraising processes, or cycles of engagement: identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship; or a desire to learn this process.
  • Professionalism and discretion in handling confidential donor and prospect information.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research of current and prospective donors determining their propensity and capacity to give major or planned gifts.
  • Utilize appropriate software and Internet based resources for research.
  • Prepare detailed analysis and reports on donor profiles to support development officers' cultivation efforts.
  • Prepare detailed briefings for management and giving officers upon request.
  • Record prospect research information on donor database.
  • Providing ongoing assessment of research methods, goals and strategies.
  • Keep abreast of trends in prospect research through training, reading industry publications, etc.
  • Develop and implement standardized, analytical approaches to prospect research rating systems.
