The Prosecuting Attorney provides for the prosecution of criminal and non-criminal cases. This is an entry-level position in the attorney series, and the incumbent is expected to become fully effective within three years. The position receives general to intensive supervision as needed from the assigned supervisor. Felony work is performed under supervision. The attorney handles a variety of misdemeanors and lower-level felony cases, including DWIs and bad-check cases; conducts legal research on felony cases for higher-level attorneys; assists trial teams; and works with law enforcement at crime scenes. The role also includes community outreach, participation in boards, task forces, and other assigned groups, and may include an on-call rotation. The attorney works independently and makes decisions within established guidelines, including whether to dismiss cases, proceed to trial, or negotiate plea agreements, while seeking guidance from the supervisor or higher-level attorneys as needed. Work takes place in office and courtroom environments. Physical effort and travel may be required, and the incumbent may work under stressful conditions or be required to go to crime scenes.
