About The Position

The Propulsion Systems Engineering Specialist is a technical leader responsible for overseeing aspects of complex Propulsion projects, certification and findings of compliance under DHC Design Approval Organization (‘DAO’). This includes engineering design, technical analysis, system integration, testing and airworthiness certification activities. We are looking for an assertive, knowledgeable individual, with good technical leadership abilities and excellent interpersonal skills. This permanent position can be based out of our Toronto or Calgary office.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in either Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Currently authorized, a candidate Authorized Person or a TCCA DAR in the specialty of Propulsion Systems preferred.
  • 10+ years experience in the design, installation, integration, testing, modification and certification of aircraft propulsion systems.
  • 10 years experience supporting airworthiness certification under TCCA jurisdiction, including working knowledge of system design, test and certification requirements and advisory materials applicable to aircraft Propulsion Systems.
  • Able to evaluate the merits of different proposals for components, subsystems and systems with regard to function, weight, reliability and safety and ensure that they are compatible with applicable aircraft systems and functions.
  • Knowledgeable with ARP4754 (Guidelines for Development of Civil Aircraft and Systems), ARP4761 (Guidelines and Methods for Conducting the Safety Assessment Process on Civil Airborne Systems and Equipment).
  • Knowledgeable with TCCA, EASA and FAA civil airworthiness regulations and advisory materials applicable to Normal Category (AWM 523) and Transport Category (AWM 525) aircraft.
  • Knowledgeable with accepted industry practices and standards including SAE RTCA and MIL standards for applicable certification requirements. Familiar with and prior working relationship with TCCA, EASA or FAA.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the DHC organization, our customers and other interfacing organizations.
  • Very strong teamwork focus and personable character promoting seamless integration into the existing Propulsion group.
  • Ability to make decisions which may involve others from various functions to exceed our customer’s needs.
  • Strong integration skills, including supplier management and technical system integration.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills, managing priorities to achieve important milestones.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of De Havilland aircraft design and operation is an asset, with emphasis on DHC-6 Twin Otter and Canadair CL-415 aircraft .

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical authority for the development and integration of propulsion systems and related aircraft-level capabilities, leading advanced technical studies to enable seamless integration of complex aircraft systems.
  • Effectively work with cross-functional teams to plan and track feature implementation, risk and mitigations and report to leadership.
  • Liaise with certification authorities both domestic and foreign through the airworthiness office to address certification issues as they arise.
  • Support aircraft test programs including test plan definition, aircraft equipment integration, aircraft test witnessing and subsequent test report preparation and review.
  • Prepare and define Technical Requirement Documents and Engineering Technical Assessments.
  • Evaluate vendor technical proposals and internal Program Change Requests.
  • Review and approve vendor requirement specifications, design documentation including engineering drawings, modification summary packages and vendor equipment qualification reports.
  • Prepare technical reports to show compliance to the applicable certification requirements. Ensure airworthiness is maintained per required regulations.
  • Provide engineering support to In-Service Engineering and where required lead the investigation and resolution of in-service aircraft issues.
  • Review and disposition Transport Canada (‘TCCA’) Service Difficulty Reports (‘SDR’) and where required lead the associated continuing airworthiness investigations.
  • Technically manage supply chain relationships by supporting technical meetings and writing/receiving Engineering Coordination Memos and other communications.
  • Support aircraft production including problem solving and snag resolution.
  • Technically supervise/coordinate the work and facilitate the mentoring of less experienced Engineers in the department.
  • Coordinate work with Subject Matter Experts (‘SME’) in Propulsion and other affected disciplines.
