Transmission and Substation Project Scheduler

Verdantas•Houston, TX
•$129,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Verdantas is seeking a Project Scheduler to support a multi-billion-dollar electric transmission capital program in the Houston region. The position is hybrid and requires the employee to be local to the Houston office. The scheduler owns schedule development and schedule integrity for assigned transmission and substation projects, working independently to build and maintain resource-loaded Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules in Primavera P6 and MS Project. The role integrates engineering, procurement, outage, construction, testing, commissioning, and energization sequences; reviews EPC contractor schedules for logic and feasibility; and provides variance analysis and recovery options to project leadership. The scheduler monitors performance across the program portfolio, establishes and maintains schedule structures and reporting, validates project progress, and communicates status, forecasts, risks, and recommendations to project managers and program leadership. The role also supports schedule governance and change-impact assessment, escalates emerging risks, and mentors early-career scheduling and controls staff.

Requirements

  • Associate degree.
  • At least 5 years of project scheduling and/or project controls experience.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience using Primavera P6 and MS Project.
  • Proven ability to develop, baseline, update, maintain, and analyze CPM schedules for large capital projects.
  • Experience supporting major energy infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with project scheduling and control, document control and management, and ProCore or similar software.
  • Experience with portfolio analytics and reporting.
  • Experience with risk assessment and mitigation planning.
  • Strong understanding of construction sequences, long-lead equipment procurement, utility outage coordination, testing, commissioning, and energization activities.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting an Owner's Engineer, owner's representative, or utility capital program environment.
  • Experience reviewing, validating, and challenging EPC contractor schedules.
  • Familiarity with Earned Value Management (EVM) and Time Impact Analysis (TIA).
  • Experience using Power BI or similar reporting and dashboard platforms.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, Unifier, or comparable ERP/project management systems.
  • Use of Copilot tool development.
  • Professional certification such as Project Management Professional (PMP), PMI Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP), or AACE Planning & Scheduling Professional (PSP).

Responsibilities

  • Independently develop, baseline, and maintain detailed CPM schedules in Primavera P6 and MS Project for assigned transmission line and substation projects.
  • Integrate engineering milestones, permitting and regulatory approvals, long-lead equipment procurement, material deliveries, outage windows, construction sequences, testing, commissioning, and energization into a defensible schedule.
  • Establish and maintain the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), activity coding, calendars, constraints, milestones, and resource assignments according to program standards.
  • Perform critical-path and near-critical-path analysis, float analysis, variance analysis, earned value analysis, what-if scenarios, time-impact analysis, and recovery scheduling.
  • Monitor float consumption and distinguish legitimate use from deterioration caused by delays, resequencing, rework, or late decisions.
  • Produce look-ahead schedules, schedule narratives, progress S-curves, resource histograms, milestone reports, and executive dashboards.
  • Collect and validate progress from project managers, engineers, EPC contractors, and construction teams, challenging status that is not supported by field evidence.
  • Assess contractor schedule quality, document deficiencies, and evaluate open ends, negative float, excessive lags, constraint misuse, and out-of-sequence progress.
  • Require and evaluate narrative justification for material changes in float, logic, forecast dates, or critical-path activities.
  • Support development and continuous improvement of schedule governance, including the EPC schedule specification, scheduling procedures, and KPI definitions.
  • Evaluate schedule impacts of change orders, scope changes, and delay claims, and support mitigation and recovery planning.
  • Communicate schedule status, variance, and forecasts to owner project managers and program leadership, providing recommendations.
  • Lead schedule update and review meetings and present schedule performance in project, program, and milestone-readiness reviews.
  • Coordinate schedule information among discipline leads, procurement, construction management, and the project manager.
  • Identify emerging schedule risks and constraints, including long-lead slippage, outage-window exposure, permitting dependencies, and resource shortfalls; escalate with impact analysis, alternatives, and recommendations.
  • Escalate risks against defined thresholds and timeframes.
  • Maintain schedule assumptions, mitigation commitments, and recovery actions in program risk and decision records, and track them to closure.
  • Mentor early-career staff on P6 practice, schedule quality, and client communication.
  • Contribute to onboarding and training of controls staff joining the program.
