Project Manager-Heavy Civil & Underground Utilities
About The Position
Our client, a well-established, 100% employee-owned general and heavy civil construction contractor based in Forestville, Maryland, is seeking an experienced Project Manager to oversee civil construction projects involving underground utilities, bridges, or both. The company has more than 50 years of experience delivering infrastructure projects throughout Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland, and emphasizes quality construction, operational excellence, safety, and collaboration. The Project Manager plans, coordinates, and directs project activities to meet contractual, budgetary, scheduling, and quality requirements. The role calls for strong construction management and financial judgment, as well as productive working relationships with clients, subcontractors, field personnel, regulators, and other stakeholders. The Project Manager may manage a large project or multiple smaller projects and support the development of project support staff.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management with relevant project management experience, a comparable combination of education and experience, or significant directly relevant project management experience.
- Experience managing civil construction projects involving underground utilities, bridges, or related heavy civil infrastructure.
- Ability to manage a large project or multiple smaller projects while overseeing several project support professionals.
- Working knowledge of construction contracts and experience negotiating change orders and subcontracts.
- Strong financial management, scheduling, planning, and project reporting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and time-management abilities.
- Decisive problem-solving skills and the ability to respond effectively to changing project demands.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, as well as project management and scheduling software such as Procore, Primavera, HeavyJob, Viewpoint, or equivalent platforms.
- Successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
Responsibilities
- Plan, direct, and coordinate assigned projects to meet established budgets, schedules, and contract requirements.
- Develop work plans, monitor project costs, maintain two- to three-week look-ahead schedules, and provide regular progress and cost forecasts.
- Prepare and manage pay applications, RFIs, purchase orders, submittals, change orders, claims, RFPs, RFQs, and project correspondence.
- Maintain strong working relationships with clients, regulators, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Coordinate personnel, equipment, and other shared resources with the General Superintendent.
- Represent the company at project meetings, client meetings, and applicable hearings.
- Review drawings and specifications to identify constructability issues, omissions, discrepancies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Identify project risks, resolve challenges, and pursue opportunities to improve efficiency and project outcomes.
- Coach, mentor, and support the development of Project Engineers, Office Engineers, and Project Assistants.
- Ensure project teams follow company policies, site safety requirements, and applicable work rules.
