About The Position

This position combines detailed electrical engineering and design with project management through the design phase of assigned projects. Project design includes the development and engineering of energy-related products and services, commonly on the customer side of the meter. The PM role involves managing, or assisting in managing, all phases of project planning and execution to meet defined project objectives, including scope, schedule, cost, quality, environment, safety, communication, security, and integration. The position requires a customer-focused, team-oriented individual with experience in both project management and commercial/industrial design engineering and the potential to become an expert advisor in key product areas. The primary location for this position is the Raleigh, NC Office; however, other Duke Energy locations will be considered as available. Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree and two (2) years minimum required related experience OR High School/GED and five (5) years minimum required related experience (for Project Manager I).
  • Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years minimum required related experience OR High School/GED and nine (9) years minimum required related experience (for Project Manager II).
  • Commercial project engineering experience in low and medium voltage electrical systems and backup power systems is essential.
  • Demonstrates understanding of electrical infrastructure and distributed generation design processes.
  • Commercial mindset that can assess and resolve customer issues with innovative options based on customer cost guidelines and quality standards.
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude to address design reliability and constructability concerns in project pre-planning stage.
  • Customer focused with demonstrated experience developing innovative engineered designs in a collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to assume total project responsibilities including quality assurance, customer interface, internal reporting, and financial evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform work in compliance with applicable safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and write in a clear, concise, and organized manner using correct grammar and ability to document, make recommendations and influence others to common vision and action.
  • Demonstrated ability to represent Duke Energy and effectively communicate technical and business impacts to technical and non-technical individuals within Duke Energy and the customers' organizations.
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer, Project Management Professional, Certified Energy Manager, and/or Licensed Electrical, Building, or Public Utility Contractor.
  • Ten years of engineering and/or project management or related experience in delivering electric infrastructure to large commercial, industrial, and institutional customers.
  • Five years of commercial and industrial design engineering experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a diverse team of individuals to meet a common goal and timeline.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop skills and become an expert technical advisor for business development team.
  • Demonstrated history of continuous improvement in job-related technical, business, and professional knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and provide options to customer issues that are complex in nature and for which there are no existing guidelines or known commercial solutions.
  • Working knowledge of computerized analysis systems (SKM, EasyPower, ETAP, CYME, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of available commercial equipment and contractor network.
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC), The National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and applicable industrial codes.

Responsibilities

  • Contacting large industrial, commercial, or institutional customers through a business development process to identify issues and provide commercially available solutions within the customers' budget constraints.
  • Developing conceptual engineering drawings, cost estimates, and contract preparation, while maintaining compliance with company, industry, and safety standards.
  • Independent investigation, design, and development of innovative solutions to resolve customer issues, which may be implemented inside the customer's facility or on the Duke Energy side of the meter.
  • Providing pricing and sales support for projects.
  • Supporting construction from a design perspective and developing and implementing commissioning plans for assigned projects.
  • Providing technical assistance with resolving operational issues, as necessary.
  • Developing and maintaining equipment specifications that meet the qualifications of standard designs and are acceptable to the construction and maintenance arms of the Energy Services organization.
