Project Geotechnical Engineer

Foth•Duluth, MN
•$90,000 - $120,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Foth is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to support a variety of environmentally related projects. This role requires strong technical expertise in geotechnical engineering, focusing on the design and analysis of earth structures, marine foundations, and heavy-lift foundation support. The candidate will assess soil and rock conditions to ensure stable foundations and safe infrastructure, addressing environmental aspects and collaborating with multi-discipline teams. This role is open to hybrid or in-office work in our Duluth or Minneapolis, MN offices. Up to 15% travel is possible with this role.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience performing civil engineering work with a geotechnical focus in heavy civil design and construction or mixed experience in the geotechnical and geological engineering space
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field
  • Experience designing waterfront facilities including pile, steel sheet, and slurry wall improvements
  • Experience designing retaining walls, shallow and deep foundations including spread footings, drilled piers, piles, and caissons
  • Experience designing dredging, slope stability, and in-water capping aspects of remediation projects
  • Experience with GeoStudio® or other 2D/3D Geotechnical modeling software
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) and/or Professional Engineering Certification (PE)

Responsibilities

  • Lead project design through technical reports, geotechnical calculations, analysis, and modeling; demonstrate initiative as a self-starter who is motivated to take on design elements and work through new technical challenges independently
  • Provide design, construction observation, and general geotechnical characterization support. Perform geotechnical analysis, design calculations, and ensure soil stability for heavy civil, upland, and in-water environmental remediation projects
  • Support pile driving analysis, dynamic pile testing, CAPWAP. Collaborate with structural engineers to create complementary foundation designs
  • Perform geotechnical analyses for heavy-lift and temporary works foundations, including settlement estimates, bearing capacity evaluations, ground improvement needs, and soil-structure/geostructural interaction considerations; evaluate soil and rock properties and support practical design recommendations that account for site constraints and environmental considerations
  • Collect data, analyze slope stability, manage groundwater, and assess geotechnical risks. Additionally, prepare boring logs, laboratory data summaries, and maintain general knowledge of geotechnical modeling software
  • Interpret engineering properties within various geologic environments that compact. Prepare natural hazard related designs for specific geotechnical risks
  • Prepare design calculations, develop field sampling plans, coordinate field work, provide construction observations, and perform site visits to analyze data
  • Prepare permit documents for mine site development, dam safety, closure, reclamation, and financial assurance
  • Support proposal development, including project budget and schedule, and work plans
