About The Position

The City of Leawood, Kansas is hiring an experienced Project Engineer to join their Public Works Department. This role is responsible for planning, designing, managing, and delivering the City's capital improvement and public infrastructure projects. The Project Engineer will provide professional engineering expertise throughout the project lifecycle, from developing project scopes, plans, specifications, schedules, and cost estimates to coordinating design, managing consultants and contractors, overseeing construction, and resolving issues. The position involves working on streets, stormwater systems, traffic improvements, and other public infrastructure, ensuring projects are thoughtfully designed, effectively managed, and successfully delivered.   • Must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited engineering school.
  • Must have a minimum of four (4) years of experience in civil engineering design, construction, project management, or equivalent experience.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Certificate of Registration as Professional Engineer (PE) from the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions. If registered in another state, must obtain Kansas registration within one (1) year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the planning, design, and construction of the City’s public infrastructure projects, including streets, bridges, storm sewer, signals, lighting, and parks.
  • Coordinate the planning, design, and construction of the City’s publicly owned facilities.
  • Coordinate consultant design projects for the accuracy of final plans and to ensure compliance with construction standards, city, federal, and state codes.
  • Assist with private development projects as it relates to traffic, drainage, public infrastructure, City right-of-way, and easements.
  • Work with Construction Inspectors and external contractors for the enforcement of the construction contract of public infrastructure projects.
  • Help solve problems and respond to citizen concerns including traffic calming, sign requests, crosswalks, and drainage concerns.
  • Work with other Engineering staff for surveys, data collection, plan preparation, and studies.
  • Assist the Right-of-Way Technician with the Right-of-Way Management System.
  • Assist the City Engineer with managing the City’s design standards, specifications, and details.
