Project Engineer – Rugged Military Electronics & Embedded Systems

Apogee Engineering•Huntsville, AL
•Onsite

About The Position

Apogee Engineering is supporting Duotech Services, LLC (DSL), in identifying and engaging qualified candidates. DSL is a technology provider to the U.S. Department of Defense, specializing in repair and sustainment of military and aerospace platform electronics subsystems and in the design and production of cost-effective RADAR systems and automated test equipment (ATE). The company has completed repairs or upgrades for more than 12,000 unique NSNs for over 40 U.S. military allied countries and supports global sustainment of mission-critical warfighting capabilities. DSL is seeking a Project Engineer to lead the technical execution of engineering projects involving rugged military-grade embedded computing systems and ATE. This mid-senior-level position combines leadership, system-level engineering, and hands-on technical problem solving. The Project Engineer serves as the primary technical lead for project teams, aligning work with customer requirements, coordinating cross-disciplinary engineering activities, and driving projects to completion. The role is based on-site in Huntsville, Alabama, with no travel.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 7 years of engineering experience supporting embedded systems, rugged electronics, aerospace, or defense environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams or technical project activities.
  • Strong understanding of system integration principles and engineering lifecycle processes.
  • Experience coordinating engineering planning, requirements development, and technical execution.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with rugged military-spec electronic systems, embedded computing platforms, and automated test equipment.
  • Background in reverse engineering, sustainment, or modernization of legacy hardware or software systems.
  • Familiarity with DoD standards, qualification processes, and system verification and validation.
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to engage with customers and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with project leadership tools such as requirements management platforms, risk tracking systems, or configuration management systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical activities across electrical, mechanical, software, test, and systems engineering disciplines.
  • Translate customer requirements, objectives, and constraints into actionable engineering plans and system-level approaches.
  • Oversee system architecture development, subsystem integration, and technical decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure engineering designs meet functional, environmental, and performance requirements for ruggedized military-grade electronics and embedded systems.
  • Coordinate and guide reverse-engineering, sustainment, and modernization activities for legacy systems.
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with customers, stakeholders, and internal leadership.
  • Monitor technical progress, risks, and issues, and implement mitigation strategies to maintain alignment with scope, schedule, and cost objectives.
  • Lead engineering reviews, technical documentation development, and configuration management efforts.
