About The Position

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Michigan Refining Division in Detroit, MI, is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative engineer to join the Area Engineering Team. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive mechanical engineering support for daily refinery operations and for leading the development and implementation of a portfolio of small-scale projects. These projects typically focus on upgrades or modifications essential for maintaining and optimizing existing process units. The Area Team Engineer reports to the Area Engineering Manager. Relocation is approved for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering degree preferred.
  • Five years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise with refinery equipment (pumps, heat exchangers, heaters, vessels, piping, etc) preferred.
  • Knowledge of refinery industry codes (ASME, ANSI, API, etc) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Applies project management skills across all phases: development, justification, design, construction, and startup.
  • Supports project documentation, data gathering, and coordination tasks under supervision.
  • Manage multiple projects and assignments in a timely, safe, and cost-effective manner.
  • Develops cost estimates, schedules, and DSP preparation.
  • Participates in Management of Change (MOC), Process Safety Information (PSI), and mechanical integrity documentation reviews and learns requirements.
  • Coordinates with external engineering consultants and designers to complete projects and studies cost-effectively.
  • Develops scope, cost estimates, and schedules for capital and expense projects; prepares Decision Support Packages (DSPs) and presents to leadership.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders including Maintenance, Construction, and Turnaround teams to support planning and execution.
  • Coordinate procurement of engineered material for projects.
  • Observes and participates in HAZOP reviews and incident investigations.
  • Learns engineering codes and specifications; ensures designs meet safety, environmental, and permitting standards.
  • Verify that designs and construction comply with industry codes and standards.
  • Promotes safety awareness and takes corrective action when unsafe practices or conditions are observed.
  • Assist the refinery operations area team as an active member providing high quality engineering technical support.
  • Provide technical assistance to the Operations Area Team during adverse operating conditions. This can include unplanned or emergency projects, clamps/wraps, and coordinating/leading repair plans.
  • Potential for support to be required outside of normal work hours.
