About The Position

The Project Engineer role is within the Gorilla division and focuses on the design and development of robust, first/next generation process machine systems and products that provide significant competitive advantage to Corning’s businesses, and/or enable new products and product lines. This role involves leading and managing project teams responsible for new Gorilla® Glass process technologies, capacity expansions, and rebuilds in support of overall business objectives. The position requires demonstrated skills in manufacturing engineering, project management, and team leadership, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to work across Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing organizations. Selected candidates will be a member of a multi-functional engineering project team, working through all stages from concept generation and development, detail design/build, system integration, and start-up to support manufacturing sites worldwide.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a BS Engineering degree or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of experience as a Project Engineer or Project Manager with proven track record successfully delivering complex engineering projects involving multiple technologies, new product / process transfer to high volume manufacturing, and significant financial or strategic impact to the business.
  • Capable of working independently in a team-based environment.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling (Solid Works preferred), and use of simulation modules to optimize designs and/or demonstrate feasibility (finite element, computational fluid dynamics etc.).
  • Experience developing capital investment request using structured stage gate process.

Nice To Haves

  • Rockwell, Siemens, and FANUC knowledge and application a plus.
  • AGV and Material Handling design, development, build, deployment, and troubleshoot equipment desirable.
  • Knowledge of glass processing with a focus on thermal processing and heat treat. Prior experience in glass melting, forming, BOD, finishing, process operations

Responsibilities

  • Project leadership responsibility for assigned projects from AR development through successful execution and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Development and leadership of large, highly matrixed multi-national project teams. Establish roles, responsibilities and competencies required for the project. Builds an effective project team utilizing internal and external personnel resources with the ability to operate and supervise matrixed organizations. Establish receivership requirements for project.
  • Proficient in applying core engineering concepts, which are the fundamental ideas that guide the design, analysis, and optimization of engineering systems. Principles in engineering, such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and material science are understood and applied.
  • Work with external machine builders, system integrators, and suppliers to successfully deliver assigned areas of responsibility to overall project team on-time, on-budget, and to meet process performance measures.
  • Lead and manage domestic and international project activities, status, and issues on a periodic basis to project & department leadership.
  • Manage new equipment design projects to ensure timely drawing completion, material sourcing, fabrication, testing, shipment, and installation/commissioning.
  • Automated Unpackage/Pack machine, integrated camera systems, machine to machine part transfer, part traffic control and online metrology integration. Supporting mechanical, electrical, and pneumatical design, monitored build, facilitated heavy debug, installation, and production support as required.
  • Communicates project goals, objectives, key status information and overall impact of the project effectively with project team members.
  • Conduct project meetings and document key issues, action items and decisions.
  • Able to work across Commercial, Development, Engineering, and Manufacturing functions as required to deliver project objectives.
  • Able to develop funding requests and projects (scope, budget, schedule) for assigned activities.
  • Support the generation of construction drawings (using 2D/3D software packages), installation drawings, and ensures that final drawing packages reflect as-built conditions and satisfies Corning drawing standards.
