About The Position

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Project Engineer in Forbes, MN location. This role is responsible for the development, management, and implementation of projects and engineering activities in connection with physical and technical aspects of the plant facilities operations, maintenance and improvements. This position will be a key technical resource for the development of projects at our United Taconite LLC Forbes, MN Processing Plant. The Project Engineer will provide mechanical engineering support to the mining and plant maintenance department, continually looking for ways to improve systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
  • 3-5 years engineering experience in heavy industry or mining/mineral processing operations.
  • Drafting and/or design capabilities in AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Project management experience in an industrial operation
  • Supervisory experience, preferably in a union environment

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements and prioritizes projects with an emphasis on meeting strategic goals and needs.
  • Conducts investigations of new and proposed equipment, materials and processes, provides independent evaluations and recommendations for proposed actions.
  • Determines performance gaps through data collection and analysis, maintains and continually increases technical competency.
  • Evaluates purchased engineering services regarding quality, accuracy, timeliness and cost.
  • Interacts with customers, suppliers and other departments, provides technical expertise to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Conducts safety and quality audits, documents conditions and improvement activities.
  • Meets maintenance needs as they develop using engineering methods.
  • Manage all aspects of engineering projects from cost estimates, materials needed, design specifications and equipment needed, to installation and start-up.
  • Ensure contractor work is scoped properly with specifications, coordinated with operations, and done safely.
  • Gather structural and mechanical information for external engineering firms when needed.
  • Direct and coordinate work performed by United Taconite and contract employees as required for complete and functional project installation in order to ensure conformity to engineering design and specifications.
  • Provide mechanical technical guidance and expertise to management, engineers, and mechanical crafts people when needed.
  • Conduct studies and prepare reports on project cost projections and potential cost-saving projects.
  • Evaluate mechanical equipment malfunctions and recommend design modifications to eliminate these malfunctions.
  • Develop plans and procedures for maintenance engineering projects to ensure equipment longevity, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Stay up to date on new technologies that may improve maintenance or operating efficiency.
  • Convert engineering concepts, models, and sketches into accurate fabrication shop drawings.
  • Other duties as assigned
