About The Position

Navarro Research and Engineering is recruiting an on-site Project Engineer 3/4 in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The position leads and accomplishes engineering efforts for large-scale infrastructure and security-oriented projects, serving as the technical liaison among project management, multidisciplinary design teams, physical security engineers, and construction management. The role is accountable for the full engineering lifecycle of assigned scope, from project definition and design development through construction, commissioning, turnover, and closeout. Work is performed 100% on-site at designated project locations. The Project Engineer coordinates engineering interfaces across infrastructure and physical security systems, manages design reviews and technical changes, supports construction and commercial activities, and ensures work complies with design intent, codes, quality requirements, safety interfaces, security impacts, configuration management, and applicable procedures. The position also mentors junior engineers and supports a compliant transition of completed work to the customer. Navarro provides turnkey nuclear, environmental, and technical services to government and commercial customers. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance, and U.S. citizenship is required due to government contract and/or clearance requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, and 10 or more years of project engineering experience focused on commercial infrastructure, civil works, or high-security/government-adjacent facilities; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.
  • Hands-on, proficient experience with ProjectSight or an equivalent project-management tool, Delta or an equivalent cost/financial-tracking tool, Aproove or an equivalent proofing/design-review tool, and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability and willingness to work 100% on-site at designated project locations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Clearance.
  • Exceptional attention to detail regarding physical-layout compliance and strict document control, and clear communication under tight project deadlines.
  • Ability to make sound technical decisions, coordinate diverse stakeholders, manage technical risk, and communicate clear, timely engineering direction.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to government contract and/or clearance requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience leading work through design, field execution, turnover, and closeout in a high-consequence, security-sensitive, or nuclear-facility environment.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate security and infrastructure design interfaces, aligning MEP, structural, network architectures, and specialized physical and electronic security subsystems.
  • Use Aproove or an equivalent platform to manage collaborative proofing and review and approval of security layouts, structures, communication, site work, construction drawings, schematics, and design iterations.
  • Conduct constructability reviews addressing high-security requirements, physical barriers, access-control layouts, and critical utility pathing.
  • Develop efficient engineering solutions that optimize infrastructure longevity and physical security without compromising budgets or contract compliance.
  • Lead combined Project Engineer and Field Engineer functions and serve as the accountable engineering point of contact for assigned scope.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary design work across civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, network, security, and facility-system interfaces.
  • Coordinate engineering with designers of record, construction subcontractors, facility operations, safety, security, quality, and other project stakeholders.
  • Manage engineering changes and technical resolutions, including Field Change Requests, Design Revision Notices, Requests for Information, nonconformance dispositions, design clarifications, constructability reviews, and field-change evaluations.
  • Manage technical document control, submittals, and RFIs from the job site using ProjectSight or an equivalent platform.
  • Perform cost engineering and progress tracking using Delta or an equivalent tool; evaluate subcontractor change orders, manage cost projections, and maintain commercial compliance.
  • Resolve complex field conflicts while ensuring infrastructure changes preserve security design intent.
  • Track critical scheduling milestones using Microsoft Office tools and optimize sequencing for high-security component handoffs and site testing.
  • Conduct routine field inspections and enforce quality-control metrics to verify installations meet infrastructure structural specifications and security classifications.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers on-site in infrastructure delivery and security compliance.
  • Evaluate design outputs and construction activities for code compliance, quality requirements, configuration management, safety interfaces, security impacts, and applicable engineering procedures.
  • Identify technical, schedule, construction, and interface risks; develop practical resolution paths; and elevate issues requiring management or stakeholder decisions.
  • Maintain visibility of engineering deliverables, reviews, approvals, commitments, and critical-path actions supporting construction and major milestones.
  • Support commissioning, turnover, closeout, and records completion for a compliant transition of completed work to the customer.
