POSITION PURPOSE Assist in managing and maintaining the Rolling Mill to process plate/coil in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner to provide finished products that meet customer specifications. Lead projects to upgrade equipment to maximize throughput, improve safety, and come up with ideas and solutions to help the organization in developing new strategies and procedures

Requirements

  • College degree – Technical Degree preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED or HSE
  • Minimum five years of experience in a steel making/producing environment.
  • Experience leading projects and scheduling contractors and maintenance of equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of mill equipment and how it functions.
  • AutoCAD and SolidWorks software experience.
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills.
  • A good understanding of production planning and maintenance systems.
  • Mid to high-level computer skills.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to professionally interface with contractors and employees throughout the organization.
  • Capable of working effectively with minimal direction or supervision.
  • Regular and reliable attendance

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related scientific field
  • 10 years’ experience in a steel industry environment.
  • Steckel or Temper mill line experience.
  • B.S. degree in an engineering discipline or an Associate’s degree and/or equivalent job experience

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Rolling Mill, Mechanical, and Electrical Maintenance Managers in the following:
  • Interact with the Rolling Mill and Finishing Maintenance Department in a team-based environment to ensure best practices are used to trouble shoot machine issues.
  • Work with department managers/planners to ensure regular preventative maintenance plans are performed on a timely basis with a view to reduce equipment down time, improve equipment utilization, and maintain product quality.
  • Write/develop the project scope of work for various maintenance and upgrade projects in Rolling Mill and Finishing Departments in conjunction with maintenance.
  • Create Auto CADD/Solid Works general arrangement and detail drawings related to projects.
  • Develop inquiries for contractor bid packages for RFE’s, regular ongoing maintenance, and major maintenance outage work with focus on Rolling Mill and Finishing Department applications.
  • Coordinate and supervise projects once they have been assigned to third-party contractors.
  • Update and maintain all Rolling Mill and Finishing department drawings to as-built status. This is ongoing work related to shortcomings of drawings provided by Mannesmann Demag when they turned the Montpelier Mill to IPSCO/SSAB.
  • Develop and write project specifications.
  • Share technical experience and drawing interpretation with inexperienced personnel.
  • Assist with vendor/contractor coordination.
  • Assist in the management of the departmental capital plan.
  • Lead and implement continuous improvement projects.
  • Adhere to all plant safety policies and ensure compliance by the Rolling Mill and Finishing Maintenance employees and contractors. Mentor those employees and contractors on safe operating practices. Identify and correct any hazards in the workplace and report all related problems for corrective action.
  • Support and be part of all cost saving and improvement programs.
  • Facilitate and participate in department meetings.
  • Participate in housekeeping tours.
  • Schedule and conduct one Safety Hazard Recognition tour per year and assign corrective action responsibility for all findings.
  • Complete SAFESTART trainer training and assist in training mill employees.
  • Track all safety deliverables and communicate monthly progress to managers.
  • Participate in accident, incident, and near miss investigations.
  • Collect and log safety observations and assign responsibility for corrective actions.
