About The Position

Intertek is seeking a Project Engineer, Life Safety and Security to join their Electrical team in Arlington Heights, Illinois. This role involves performing testing and evaluation on Life Safety and Security products to ensure compliance with US, Canadian, and international product safety standards. Responsibilities include writing reports, communicating with clients, creating evaluation reports and test plans, conducting and/or witnessing testing, and resolving technical and administrative issues. The position offers the opportunity to grow a career in facilitating international trade and regulatory product testing within Intertek's Electrical business line, which has over 100 years of product testing expertise across various industries.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • 2+ years relatable experience
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable driving record
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with shifting priorities and demanding deadlines
  • Must be detailed-oriented and able to effectively prioritize and organize workload, with efficient time management
  • Must possess the fundamental technical and administrative skills required to perform the job duties

Responsibilities

  • Performing testing and evaluation on a variety of Life Safety and Security products to determine compliance with applicable US, Canadian and other International product safety standards.
  • Writing reports.
  • Communicating with clients.
  • Creating evaluation reports and test plans.
  • Conducting and/or witnessing testing.
  • Resolving technical and/or administrative issues.
  • Reading and determining applicability of national codes and standards clauses for the EUT (equipment under test).
  • Reading and understanding schematics and manufacturing instructions.
  • Validating the project scope and sample applicability.
  • Following sample handling procedures, ensuring that sample is logged in and out of the system.
  • Moving equipment as needed through the facility.
  • Properly packaging sample for shipment.
  • Completing preliminary design reviews (PDR) both on and off site.
  • Setting up and operating standard test equipment including, but not limited to spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope, multi-meter, dielectric strength tester, ground continuity tester, digital multi-meter, surge generator, over-voltage tester, environmental condition chamber, and articulated probes.
  • Using hand tools to build/calibrate test fixtures.
  • Performing testing of products in accordance with standards. Core tests include, but are not limited to: rating, leakage current, dielectric, temperature, pressure, stability, mechanical hazard, flammability, abnormal and fault insurance, rain, radiation, sound, and laser.
  • Mentoring less senior technical personnel.
  • Supplying information for quotes such as length of project, site needed, rental equipment, samples, and standards that will be used.
  • Providing more specialized "expertise" in one product category, i.e., becoming a reviewer, resident expert, or obtaining and maintaining advanced product knowledge.
  • Performing field labeling jobs.
  • Providing sales support such as attending client visits.
  • Communicating project status and test results to client, sales personnel, and management throughout testing.
  • Providing on-going support to clients as needed.
  • Identifying, properly documenting, and recommending engineering judgments within policy guidelines.
  • Performing other work as required.
