About The Position

NTH is seeking an Electrical Power Systems Project Engineer for a key position in our newly formed Electrical Engineering Power and Utilities Division. This position is intended to be based out of our Grand Rapids office, with potential for an experienced and independent candidate to work out of our Northville or Lansing offices. This is an exciting seller-doer type role. The right candidate will have the opportunity to bid, manage, and execute engineering projects, and develop strong client relationships and repeat business. This position naturally provides opportunities to develop subject matter expertise, project management capability, client relationships, and leadership skills within the division. This is a ground-floor opportunity to help build NTH’s Electrical Engineering Power and Utilities Division. The right candidate will not only help establish the Division’s client base and reputation, but help develop its internal culture, standards, and operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited 4-year university. Study concentration in electric power, controls, or renewable energy preferred.
  • Michigan P.E. License or ability to obtain one in 12 months.
  • Ability and desire to manage projects and own outcomes.
  • 4+ years of experience in electrical power, renewable energy, construction, or industrial maintenance fields.
  • Experience preparing engineering proposals, fee estimates, schedules, or budgets.
  • Ability to work independently and safely in utility, industrial, and construction environments.
  • Ability to read, understand, and create complex electrical drawings including one-lines, 3-lines, and control schematics.
  • Ability to create complex electrical design deliverables including one-lines, schematics, grounding, equipment layouts, and engineering studies with minimal oversight and guidance.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, demonstrated team-oriented approach to problem-solving, and strong interpersonal skills for contact with clients and fellow engineers/technicians.
  • Accuracy, dependability, and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously while coordinating engineering, design, and project execution activities.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Perform job duties in the field and office, during non-standard work hours, as necessary.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel within the lower peninsula of Michigan.
  • Authorized to work full-time in the U.S.A.

Nice To Haves

  • 2+ years of experience managing engineering or construction projects.
  • Field experience in electrical substations, power plants, renewable energy or industrial facilities.
  • Experience with electrical substation or renewable energy projects.
  • Experience with SEL protective relays.
  • Experience modeling electrical systems in ETAP or similar software.
  • Experience with CAD design software.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing clients while identifying opportunities for repeat work and expanded services.
  • Work safely and follow customer and NTH safety programs in industrial, utility, and construction field environments.
  • Prepare and review contract documents, designs, and specifications for electrical power projects including electrical distribution, electrical substations, power generation, and renewable energy.
  • Prepare technical proposals, cost estimates, plans, technical specifications, and reports, including day to day correspondence.
  • Size, specify, and review approvals for a variety of electrical equipment.
  • Perform a variety of engineering analyses, calculations, and modeling with and without the use of engineering software including Load flow, voltage drop, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, and grounding.
  • Prepare engineering proposals, work plans, and project pursuit evaluations (go/no-go decisions).
  • Attend and lead project-related meetings.
  • Track, review, and communicate project metrics including schedule, financial performance, and invoicing both internally and to customers.
  • Travel independently to customer sites for bid investigation, construction progress review or field engineering support.
  • Mentor and provide direction to staff engineers.
  • Develop and maintain technical leadership in one or more areas of electrical power engineering.
  • Work closely and coordinate design with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers.
  • Support development of design standards, project management, and standard operating procedures.
