About The Position

The Engineer I will apply established engineering principles in the design/development of electric, gas and/or water distribution facilities depending on area of work concentration. This role involves designing and planning improvements, additions, and replacements of utility facilities, preparing and reviewing drawings, material specifications, and cost estimates. The engineer will also provide technical assistance to external parties, perform computer analysis for utility systems, evaluate new products and equipment, and coordinate work with other departments and agencies. Field trips for data gathering and inspection are also part of the responsibilities. Staying updated on engineering developments, rules, and regulations is crucial.

Requirements

  • A valid driver's license from state of residence is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering or related field is required.
  • 0 - 2 years of Engineering experience is required.
  • Occupationally significant combination of organizational ability.
  • Occupationally significant oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and methods to utility industry.
  • Spatial and form perception.
  • Mathematical ability.
  • Attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Other Engineering disciplines would be considered if adequate IE work experience exists and for a more senior position.

Responsibilities

  • Design/plan improvements, additions and replacements of electric, gas or water facilities.
  • Prepare and/or review drawings, material specifications/costs and layout methods.
  • Provide system information and technical assistance to consultants, developers and contractors.
  • Prepare estimates, work authorizations and procedures for field personnel to ensure compliance with federal/state regulations.
  • Perform various types of computer analysis for assigned utility system.
  • Test for and propose corrections to system malfunctions.
  • Evaluate new products/ideas, test new equipment and prepare report of results.
  • Review obsolete/surplus items for possible use.
  • Determine, within guidelines, whether a construction change should be made while work is in progress.
  • Review reports concerning leaks/outages and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Coordinate departmental work with other areas/departments within the Division, governmental agencies and contractors.
  • Make field trips to gather data, take measurements and/or inspect/observe utility construction.
  • Stay abreast of up-to-date developments in engineering by studying engineering progress, various rules, regulations, codes, etc.
  • Maintain library of industry related materials.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
