About The Position

Global Engineering executes major CAPEX projects in Pharma Technical Operations (PT), the manufacturing organization within Roche Pharmaceutical Division. Within Global Engineering, the Project Director has overall responsibility for driving large, complex projects to successful completion in support of GMP manufacturing operations. As leader, the Project Director is expected to build a high performing matrixed team and role model the lean delivery culture. Requires excellent internal and external collaboration and influencing skills and the ability to lead diverse, cross-functional teams in situations that are often ambiguous. Role requires the ability to develop and deliver against complex execution strategies. Knowledge of advanced project management techniques and technologies to improve delivery are preferred. Responsible for effective project management of project phases: project initiation, conceptual design, basic design, detailed design & construction & commissioning assuring that the investment is able to achieve functional, strategic, compliance and financial goals. The Project Director reports to a regional Head of Project Delivery US. Work is self-directed. Responsibilities of this position include leading a multi year effort to deliver a major pharma manufacturing project >$750M, and will typically have a number of Project Managers reporting to them during this project. Post execution of the project, this person will be required to travel to support other projects across the USA, and potentially globally. This role requires extensive travel and potential temporary relocation for the duration of the project, project may be located at any US site.

Requirements

B.S. in engineering or construction related fields with a minimum of 15 years successfully managing projects in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry, with at least 5 years managing large, complex projects, preferably in an international environment.
Able to execute scope that is highly complex on projects that are large (>$200M) in GMP manufacturing operations.
Advanced/Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, communications, negotiation, collaboration, and management skills.
Proven expertise in effectively applying and/or developing advanced project management tools and methodologies.
Develops solutions to unique problems requiring innovation and the adaptation of the latest project management techniques.
Broad understanding of the principles of various engineering disciplines, in-depth understanding of one engineering discipline directly related to Roche core business of manufacturing.
Ability to contribute technically to and influence complex projects in GMP manufacturing settings.
Risk based commissioning and qualification methods.
Understand facility end user operational needs and principals.
Advocate for End-User organizations to assure that the project meets or exceeds all compliance requirements and functional needs.
Ability to create a collaborative “one team” environment.
Special knowledge requirements include biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical processes and facility design approaches, plus solid understanding of Pharmaceutical cGMP requirements and Roche Engineering Manual project execution methodologies.
General knowledge requirements include general understanding of industry standards & best practices, Federal regulations (GXPs), basic construction methodology (particularly in the process, automation, and mechanical engineering disciplines, project finances and risks, and project controls systems), EH& S regulations, Quality Assurance, and IT systems.
Able to demonstrate understanding of global engineering’s strengths and weaknesses, and impact on other departments outside of Global Engineering.
Global experience and culturally savvy, can adapt to and effectively manage in various cultural environments and organizational levels including executive management.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of advanced project management techniques and technologies to improve delivery are preferred.
Active in lean delivery of capital projects, past experience a plus.
Other additional languages a plus.
MS or PhD in Engineering and/or an MBA and/or a PE/equivalent.
Technical or operational experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Lean Construction knowledge and practitioner.

Responsibilities

Accountable for leading the assigned CAPEX project(s) to achieve the project’s approved user requirements, scope, cost and schedule parameters, meeting quality expectations and right-first-time.
Leading by demonstrating Roche Leadership Commitments and PT Behaviors, influences project outcomes, improves team performance, and achieves established project, Global Engineering and (specific Site location) Operations goals.
Proactively build trustful and effective relationships with key customers and stakeholders, and partner pro-actively to develop and execute (assigned Capex Project) to support Roche business objectives.
Responsible for effective project management of project phases: project initiation, conceptual design, basic design, detailed design & construction & commissioning assuring that the investment is able to achieve functional, strategic, compliance and financial goals.
Leading a multi year effort to deliver a major pharma manufacturing project >$750M.
Travel to support other projects across the USA, and potentially globally.
Serve as a primary consultant to senior management.
