About The Position

Our San Francisco studio, a 100-person team within a 3,000-person global firm, is expanding its expertise in life sciences, biotech, and advanced research. We are seeking a Project Architect who views lab planning and MEP coordination as integral design tasks, not mere limitations. This is a design-focused role, not a project management position. The successful candidate will be responsible for safeguarding the research function by ensuring the building's systems precisely meet scientific needs while maintaining design integrity through permitting and value engineering processes.

Requirements

Building, zoning, and energy code fluency.
Familiarity with lab planning standards and hazardous materials requirements.
Proficiency in site analysis.
Experience from preliminary design studies through contract documents and specifications.
Experience in construction contract administration on MEP-intensive projects.
Experience in consultant coordination across mechanical, electrical, and process engineering disciplines.
Client communication skills that do not require a translator.
Advanced Revit proficiency.
Rhino/Grasshopper for conceptual and computational modeling.
Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop) proficiency.
Experience with visualization software such as Enscape, Lumion, or V-Ray.
Experience with physical modeling tools like 3D printing and laser cutting.
Bachelor's degree in architecture or a related discipline, required.
Architectural license.
8-10+ years of experience.
LEED GA accreditation within 6 months of hire.
One Living Design accreditation of your choosing: LEED AP with Specialty, BREEAM AP, WELL AP, SITES AP, CPHC/CPHD, or ILFI Living Future Accreditation.

Responsibilities

Lead all phases of design and delivery for complex Science & Technology projects, upholding firm standards, contractual obligations, and design intent, particularly at the intersection of lab planning and building systems.
Translate the technical implications of lab and research space requirements (e.g., vibration, air change rates, containment, chemical exhaust) into design decisions and assess their financial impact on the project and client.
Direct project documentation and drawing production, and lead Quality Control (QC) reviews at all stages for accuracy, constructibility, and completeness, with a focus on MEP-intensive lab spaces.
Ensure adherence to Perkins&Will's Quality Assurance (QA) standards throughout the project lifecycle.
Coordinate architecture, interior design, and lab planning with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and process engineering consultants to foster a cohesive project team.
Serve as the primary technical liaison with clients, especially research and facilities stakeholders, translating programmatic requirements into building system solutions.
Manage regulatory reviews and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) submissions for building codes, life safety, and hazardous materials, addressing the specific permitting complexities of lab and research occupancies.
Effectively manage construction contract administration for technically complex builds where design details have significant operational consequences for the client's scientific endeavors.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of lab planning standards, containment strategies, and building technologies relevant to Science & Technology projects.
Contribute to business development efforts, including pursuits, proposals, and interviews.
Lead charrettes, pin-ups, and design reviews to drive decision-making.
Mentor staff and manage assignments to develop their expertise in technically demanding project types.
