About The Position

The Project Archaeologist 1 position is a mid- to upper-level role within DOWL's Environmental Services (Archaeology) team. This position serves as a subject matter expert in cultural resources management (CRM) and provides support to internal and external clients. Responsibilities include proposal writing, research, documentation, report preparation, public involvement, and coordination with agencies and tribal governments. The role involves synthesizing research, conducting cultural resource identification and documentation, assisting with fieldwork (monitoring, survey, testing), performing lab work, managing field data, and producing reports. The Project Archaeologist 1 is also responsible for managing project schedules, deliverables, field crews, and field data.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in anthropology or archeology or other closely related field.
  • Specialized training and experience working in CRM.
  • Proficient understanding of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Proficient understanding of market sector software.
  • Fully proficient understanding of technical fundamentals related to the market sector.
  • 6 years of progressively responsible experience as a CRM professional.
  • 5 years of experience with an advanced degree.
  • Must meet Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to cut brush using chain saw or machete.
  • Ability to walk and hike through rough terrain, snow, and ice.
  • Ability to dig with shovel and hand tools.
  • Ability to screen dirt and sediment.
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry between 30 and 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work on uneven ground surfaces and within small excavations.
  • May need to work at rural and remote sites.
  • May need to travel by small fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft.
  • Regularly required to sit.
  • Required to talk and hear.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in cultural resources management (CRM).
  • Provide mid- to upper-level cultural resources support to DOWL’s internal and external clients.
  • Write proposals, conduct research, and prepare documentation and reports.
  • Engage in public involvement and coordinate with agencies and tribal governments.
  • Synthesize background research and data assembly results.
  • Conduct cultural resource identification and documentation.
  • Carry out or assist in limited monitoring, survey, and testing of cultural resource sites.
  • Perform lab work and manage field data.
  • Produce small- and moderate-scale cultural resource reports.
  • Draft sections or portions for broader CRM or other reporting efforts.
  • Assemble lists of stakeholders and consulting parties, including tribal governments and entities.
  • Arrange and participate in cultural resources consultation meetings.
  • Prepare correspondence specific to cultural resource investigations and CRM activities.
  • Manage project schedules and deliverables.
  • Manage field survey crews and field data.
  • Oversee the production of reports.
  • Lead technical efforts on a variety of project types, sizes, and complexities.
  • Mentor others on technical tasks and skills.
  • Perform quality control of moderately complex deliverables.
  • Lead small teams (1-2 people) to complete challenging assignments.
  • Provide clear communication and direction to others.
  • Produce technical reports and memos, Cultural Resource Baseline Reports, Phase 1 and Phase 2 reports, Section 106 documentation, and other cultural documents independently.

  • Conduct field studies and investigations.
  • Develop budgets and schedules for complex tasks.
  • Break down complex projects into logical tasks.

  • Demonstrate practical application of NHPA, NAGPRA, NEPA, ARPA, and relevant state laws.
  • Interact directly with clients to resolve technical issues on moderate to complex projects.
  • Lead client project meetings.
  • Perform advanced levels of technical work on large, complex projects as a trusted technical member of the market sector.
  • Review the work of others.
  • May perform some project management tasks.
  • Oversee team operations and the daily workflow of the team (if a supervisor).
  • Organize workflow and ensure employees understand their duties or delegated tasks (if a supervisor).
  • Recruit and hire new employees (if a supervisor).
  • Implement training for new hires and identify training opportunities for current staff (if a supervisor).
