About The Position

The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) at Sentara Leigh Hospital bridges the gap between intensive care and medical-surgical units. You will provide high-quality, patient-centered care to complex patients who require close monitoring, frequent assessments, and specialized support. This role involves managing cardiac telemetry, interpreting vital signs, administering precise medication drips, and identifying changes in condition to prevent critical emergencies.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) accepted.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of recent acute care, telemetry, or critical care experience.
  • Active, unencumbered Virginia RN License (or compact state license).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Previous experience in a high-acuity Stepdown or PCU environment.
  • Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN) credential.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive head-to-toe assessments.
  • Continuously monitor telemetry, cardiac rhythms, and vital signs to detect any sudden changes.
  • Administer prescribed medications, IV therapies, and complex treatments.
  • Manage specific cardiac/medical drips and utilize monitoring equipment safely.
  • Collaborate directly with physicians, respiratory therapists, and the broader care team to implement and evaluate individual patient care plans.
  • Educate patients and their families on disease management, recovery expectations, and assist them with healthcare decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation within the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.
  • Adhere strictly to infection control protocols and Sentara policies.
