About The Position

The Program Manager for Watson Research Initiatives manages, organizes, and prioritizes the administrative, financial, and operational needs of a variety of research initiatives, including the Climate Solutions Lab, in partnership with their respective faculty director. The Program Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of each initiative, including program planning and execution, budget management, and hiring/staffing needs. The role works collaboratively with the faculty director, and internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement strategies for program growth and development. Acts as a liaison between the program and university administration, faculty, students, and external partners. Develops and maintains strong relationships with stakeholders, including alumni, donors, and community partners. Ensures the program is in compliance with university policies and regulations. Plays a key role in managing each program’s web and online presence, in addition to overseeing, planning, and coordinating events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, advanced degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in program management, or the equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Excellent communication skills – both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proven budget and financial management skills.
  • Basic academic research skills (e.g., general knowledge of bibliographic citation styles).
  • Basic knowledge of climate change and responses including climate resilience, risks, mitigation, and adaptation.
  • Event-coordination experience.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to work under pressure for multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

  • Experience in higher education is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Management of Climate Solutions Lab Programming: Works closely with the Climate Solutions Lab director to develop and enhance the CSL’s activities and research projects. Manages the onboarding of new hires and invited researchers as short-term guests of the center. Ensures that visitors and speakers are informed about programming and opportunities for further collaboration. In consultation with the CSL Director, solicits and edits papers from qualified authors for the CSL White Paper Series, focusing on various climate-related topics. Manages the day-to-day operations of the Lab, including office management and oversight of its $300k budget to ensure proper stewardship of resources. Works closely with the director of the Climate Solutions Lab to develop research projects and conferences that enhance the quality, relevance, and reach of the lab. Oversees all aspects of a growing and complex event schedule including workshops, seminars, podcasts, and conferences.
  • Management of Research Programs, Initiatives and the development of new Watson Centers: Serves as the operational lead for emerging initiatives at the Watson School, overseeing the comprehensive administrative, financial, and personnel functions required to scale new research programs. The Program Manager facilitates the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of Research Assistants, PhD students, and international visiting scholars, while establishing the scalable office processes necessary for new research centers to thrive. This position ensures resource stewardship and strategic budget allocation to manage the fiscal health of these developing initiatives. The Program Manager designs the administrative frameworks necessary to transition emerging research programs from concept to sustainable reality. In collaboration with respective Faculty Directors, the position oversees editorial content for each initiative to ensure that digital platforms remain current and complete.
