About The Position

The Safety Systems team at OpenAI works to ensure the responsible development and deployment of the company's most capable AI models. This involves evaluations, safeguards, red teaming, deployment decisions, and the systems that help OpenAI understand and reduce risk. The Safety Program Manager will be crucial in streamlining the safety review process, driving safe deployment of new models and products, synthesizing input from various stakeholders (research, product, engineering, legal, policy), and ensuring risks are monitored, mitigated, or resolved. The role is highly cross-functional, collaborating with research, engineering, integrity, product, and strategy teams to ensure thorough safety risk reviews for all launches. The position is based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid work model requiring 3 days in the office per week.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree in computer science, engineering, management or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive track record of successfully delivering high-profile, complex projects against tight deadlines.
  • Technically versed, and have effectively partnered with engineering and fundamental research teams of the highest caliber.
  • Expertise in designing and implementing simple, scalable processes that solve complex problems.
  • Relentlessly resourceful and thrive in ambiguous, fast-paced environments.
  • Strong knowledge of content integrity and moderation, including industry best practices and regulatory guidelines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Care about AGI safety.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate cross-functional safety launch readiness across model and product releases, ensuring risk tables, mitigations, monitoring plans, and decision points are clearly tracked from early scoping through post-launch review.
  • Build operating rhythms across Safety Systems, Integrity, Strategy, User Operations, and engineering teams so safety learnings from past launches translate into concrete improvements to automated safeguards, tooling, and review processes.
  • Design and run key internal programs, including incident management and processes for regularly updating our safety mitigations.
  • Work directly with technical stakeholders to create scalable, repeatable safety processes.
