About The Position

The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is seeking a Program Manager, Geologic Mapping. NBMG is the state geological survey for Nevada and a public service unit at UNR. This role is primarily responsible for overseeing the production of geologic map publications at NBMG, supporting the core mission of producing geologic maps and digital databases for statewide assessments of natural resources, geologic hazards, and the overall geologic framework. The position will lead initiatives to acquire and use external grant funding, mainly through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) STATEMAP program, by preparing proposals, serving as Principal Investigator, overseeing cost share obligations, and managing project budgets. Responsibilities also include overseeing the publication of NBMG geologic mapping products, identifying areas to map, organizing personnel, managing geologic and cartographic production, overseeing peer-review, and facilitating final publication of map products and digital datasets. The position will act as the NBMG liaison with the State Mapping Advisory Committee and serve as the “STATEMAP coordinator” with the USGS National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. Management duties include direct supervision of the geologic mapping team and project-based management of academic faculty, cartographic/GIS staff, and administrative staff involved with the mapping program and grants, potentially supervising up to 10 NBMG personnel annually, as well as managing contractors and temporary employees (~5 additional individuals). The candidate will also complete their own geologic mapping and fundamental research projects related to natural resources, geologic hazards, and the geologic framework in Nevada, including new mapping, data interpretation, and publication of results.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree and five (5) years of related professional work experience OR Master’s Degree and three (3) years of related professional work experience.
• Related Professional Experience: Geology or related geoscience field.
• Research in structural geology, economic geology and/or Quaternary geology, with substantial experience in geologic mapping of bedrock and/or Quaternary deposits.
• Graduate research to be verified by these projects or peer reviewed publications.
• Project management.
• Driver’s license

Nice To Haves

• Demonstrated publication of map products at 1:24,000 or similar scale.
• Experience with personnel management.
• Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects.
• Expertise in one or more of the following geologic disciplines: Quaternary geology, structural geology, sedimentology, economic geology, tectonics, and/or volcanology as demonstrated through graduate level research or publications.

Responsibilities

• Managing contractors and temporary employees that contribute to the program.
• Completing own geologic mapping projects and fundamental research projects related to the evaluation of natural resources, geologic hazards, and the overall geologic framework in Nevada.
