About The Position

The Program Head, Cosmetology, works on the leadership and day-to-day functioning of the program(s) or assigned area(s) to attain the goal of providing quality educational experiences for students. The Program Head, Cosmetology provides excellent learning experiences, facilitates the learning process, seeks, and provides professional development opportunities, contributes to the development of curriculum courses/programs, and interacts with community/industry members. This position also serves as the program head for the manicuring program and oversees the day-to-day operation of the SCC cosmetology/manicuring salon which is open to the public.

Requirements

• Associate degree in Cosmetology
• Hold current NC Cosmetology license and NC Cosmetology Instructor license
• Administrative experience
• Knowledge of NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts regulations & paperwork requirements
• Teaching experience in field or related area
• Knowledge of online learning platforms

Responsibilities

• Personnel Management: Recruit, interview, and recommend the appointment of faculty, full-time and adjunct, to the Dean of Business Programs and/or Associate Vice President of Transfer and Business and provide appropriate orientation. Maintain new hire orientation paperwork. Provide departmental onboarding/orientation. Submit all hiring documents and verification of credentials for all departmental faculty when applicable. Assist departmental faculty in course planning, instructional delivery, and classroom management. Monitor clinic floor at all times. Prepare a master schedule of course offerings each semester that meets the needs of the departmental programs and the students. Assign teaching schedules for departmental faculty within workload policy guidelines. Supervise and evaluate the operation of all classes and departmental faculty in accordance with policy, including classroom observations. Observations must be conducted once per year (more if deemed necessary by the Dean or Associate Vice President). Identify and recommend professional development needs of the departmental faculty. Assist faculty in creation and completion of professional development goals and monitor progress. Resolve student grievances with instructors and assist classroom management, when necessary. Keep detailed records of student infractions and refer to Dean of Students when a Code of Conduct policy has been violated. Facilitate the communication of departmental and/or college information to departmental faculty, both full-time and adjunct, via meetings, emails, etc., as needed. Hold structured weekly meetings for updates. Advocate and provide motivation for departmental faculty. Communicate faculty needs to the Dean and/or Associate Vice President. Encourage sound educational practices and student engagement.
• Program Management: Facilitate the selection of textbooks and submission of the Textbook Order Form. Provide updated content to students. Ensure weekly student time is entered into time tracking software; provide weekly time reports to students; monitor student state board hours. Submit all required paperwork to the NC State Board of Cosmetic Arts. Provide the Dean with a monthly report showing results/grades from the State Board exam. Provide the Dean with a weekly report showing clients served and fees collected. Manage and resolve any conflict within the department. Create and monitor employee performance improvement plans (PIPs), when warranted. Review, evaluate, and assess departmental goals and annual plans, student learning outcomes, and course offerings periodically (yearly at minimum), facilitating innovation in curricular and instructional development in keeping with the mission and vision of the College. Recommend appropriate revisions to the program of study, course objectives, and other departmental program information to Dean and/or Associate Vice President. Ensure each departmental program is in full compliance with the requirements for accreditation, certification, and other standards as stipulated by NCCCS, SACSCOC, the State Board of Cosmetic Arts, and any other related agencies and organizations. Develop and maintain productive relationships with those agencies and other organizations within the community/industry which are pertinent to the departmental programs and to prospective graduates.
• Budget Management: Recommend departmental needs for personnel, equipment, supplies, facilities, and other resources during the annual planning process to the Dean. Collaborate with faculty to determine departmental needs. Coordinate the requisition of resources and services, including equipment, supplies, facilities, and other materials required for the effective delivery of instruction. Verify and submit travel requests of faculty for approval.
• Classroom Instruction: Teach 9 credit hours of primarily COS courses (up to 23 contact hours) each semester. Ensure that each class session contains essential curricular components, incorporates appropriate content and pedagogy, and is relevant to current events/trends. As needed, teach classes online, on-campus, and/or at off-campus sites. Issue Dropout Detective alerts in Canvas for students who are not progressing. Monitor all cosmetology classes to ensure instructors are raising alerts when needed. Evaluate student progress and provide appropriate, timely feedback. Maintain regular, appropriate, professional communication with students. Incorporate appropriate instructional technology to enhance student learning. Ensure cleanliness of instructional areas and laboratories daily. Ensure the proper operation of classroom/lab equipment, reporting any malfunctions to the appropriate person(s) timely. Coordinate the evaluation and acquisition of instructional materials, audiovisual aids, support, and equipment needs. Develop and distribute course syllabi according to the established template and guidelines, providing appropriate information to students concerning course expectations, evaluation criteria, and access to student services. Approve master syllabi with updated program and course learning outcomes.
• Other Services to Students: Maintain appropriate accessibility for students, including a minimum of five office hours a week. Serve as an educational mentor to cosmetology students by providing academic and employment opportunities. Provide a time report of state board hours to each student weekly. Maintain regular, appropriate, professional communication with students, colleagues, and clients. Verify graduation degree audits if needed. Assist in the recruitment and retention efforts of the College. Attend outreach events. Advocate and provide motivation for students.
• Divisional Administrative Expectations: Prepare and submit instructional records, reports, grades, and all other required paperwork in a timely, efficient manner meeting all deadlines, checking for accuracy, correctness, and completeness of all data. Remain current in discipline and instructional methods through professional development activities offered by the College and other opportunities, including attendance at off-campus activities, webinars, etc., as approved. Facilitate program and curriculum review. Serve on and actively contribute to college committees as assigned. Participate in campus activities. Participate in discipline, departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings, and other announced co-curricular activities of the College. Maintain regular, professional communication within the college and affiliated industry contacts. Maintain posted office and on-campus hours sufficient to fulfill all contracted duties and individual professional obligations and meet the needs of the discipline, department, division, and College. Support all functions of the College, including compliance with all facets of the College's policies.
• Other Duties Specific to this Position: Establish and maintain an effective advisory committee in support of the departmental programs. Hold advisory committee meetings at least once per year. Keep meeting minutes and collaborate with department on industry recommendations. Oversee clinical and laboratory experiences and other work-based learning activities to verify program outcomes are met. Ensure compliance with State Board of Cosmetic Arts regulations for Cosmetology, Manicuring and for salon operation. Oversee the day-to-day operation of the cosmetology/manicuring salon which is open to the public. Ensure the salon meets all State Board of Cosmetic Arts requirements, provides quality learning experience for students, and offers excellent customer service.
