About The Position

The Program Director (PD) provides leadership and oversight for the Family Medicine Residency Program in compliance with the ACGME Program Requirements for Family Medicine. This position has a primary clinical practice at Mercy Hospital Berryville and the Mercy Clinic Berryville, the clinical partner for this rural training program. This is a 1-2 program in which residents serve the first year in Fayetteville at Washington Regional, integrated into the UAMS Northwest Family Medicine Residency Program. For years 2 and 3, residents are based in Carroll County. The Program Director has oversight of residents and faculty at two rural family practice outpatient clinics – a Mercy clinic in Berryville and a Washington Regional clinic in Eureka Springs. This collaboration across institutions combines the academic excellence and research resources of UAMS with both urban and rural community-based care models to train compassionate, skilled family physicians who are prepared to meet the evolving health needs of rural communities in Arkansas and beyond. The PD ensures the program fosters excellence in patient care, resident education, faculty development, professionalism, diversity, and continuous improvement, consistent with the UAMS mission to develop the next generation of confident, practice-ready physicians committed to primary care and service to their communities.

Requirements

  • Board certification in Family Medicine (American Board of Family Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians)
  • Active, unrestricted medical license.
  • Minimum of three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience. Examples include but are not limited to prior service as residency faculty/core faculty, service as a residency site medical director.
  • Demonstrated skills in teaching, administration, and leadership.
  • Proof of legal authority to work in the United States on the first day of employment.

  • Experience with ACGME accreditation, quality improvement, and scholarly activity.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the single, ACGME-approved Program Director responsible for program design, implementation, and quality.
  • Maintain continuity of leadership and ensure adequate administrative time for program oversight.
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, evaluation, promotion, and remediation of residents.
  • Ensure compliance with ACGME requirements, institutional policies, duty hours, and supervision standards.
  • Submit required data and documentation for ACGME accreditation and institutional reviews.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive curriculum aligned with ACGME Core Competencies.
  • Ensure appropriate inpatient, outpatient, and community training experiences that provide continuity of care.
  • Support resident scholarly activity, simulation, and quality improvement projects.
  • Monitor resident performance outcomes and use data for program evaluation and improvement.
  • Recruit and mentor faculty; provide evaluation and professional development.
  • Ensure faculty meet ACGME qualifications and allocate sufficient time for education and supervision.
  • Collaborate with institutional leadership to secure adequate administrative, financial, and clinical resources.
  • Lead annual program evaluation and continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Address deficiencies and implement action plans promptly.
  • Promote a professional, inclusive learning environment.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice to model high-quality, compassionate family medicine care.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and lifelong learning.
