The Dementia Specialist will be responsible for planning and coordinating a therapeutic program schedule that meets the spiritual, social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of the resident. This role involves assessing resident characteristics, planning program content in conjunction with other departments, and monitoring daily unit functioning to ensure program continuity and appropriate changes. The position also focuses on establishing teamwork through effective communication, developing cooperative relationships with other department directors, and integrating the program with other services. Additionally, the Dementia Specialist will assess staff educational needs regarding program and dementia-specific knowledge, work with the In-service Director to provide education, and offer program continuation for new staff. Marketing the unit through community involvement and participation in organizations like the Alzheimer's Association is also a key responsibility. The role includes planning and distributing program newsletters, participating in reviews of social work and recreation services, and serving as a role model for staff in dementia unit care. The Dementia Specialist must treat residents with respect and dignity, provide orientation and in-service training on the social/emotional needs of Alzheimer's residents, and immediately report any suspected resident abuse to the Administrator. Initial pre-admission assessments, assistance with resident admissions for a smooth transition, and supporting the adjustment of residents and families to the facility are also part of the role. Regular contact with new residents and their families for the first month post-admission is required to ensure needs are met and difficulties are resolved. The position also requires staying informed about current research, new programs, and community resources that could benefit residents and families, and making appropriate referrals.
