The rescue coordinator should actively look for new rescue agencies to work with and place as many animals as possible with licensed rescue groups when placement with KHS is not available. This position will maintain current records for all rescue agencies in accordance to state regulations. This position should have good common knowledge of animal behavior to translate to the rescue agency. This position will coordinate with KHS adoptions staff at the time of pick up in order to make a smooth transfer between agencies. This position will manage the KHS Working Cat Program. Respect for the human animal bond is a must.

Requirements

  • Education/Certification: High School Diploma or Equivalent. Must be willing and able to obtain and maintain status as a KHS Certified Euthanasia Technician.
  • Experience Required: Background in a caregiving or customer service field preferred. Basic knowledge of pet health, behavior and well-being. Basic knowledge of common animal diseases, positive reinforcement based training/ animal handling experience. Working knowledge of animal sheltering.
  • Skills/Abilities: This is a working supervisory position that requires a high degree of internal and external customer service skills, flexibility, conflict resolution skills, and team building. Excellent communication and organization skills are a must. Proficient in Microsoft office products. Must be able to work within a fast paced, unpredictable environment. The ability to cope with physically and emotionally demanding work. Must have the ability to exercise good judgment and make independent decisions with limited supervision. Must have a respect for the human/animal bond. Must be competent in handling all types of companion animals including but not limited to: dogs, cats, rodents, and birds.

Responsibilities

  • Customer Service: Provides and models timely, polite, and respectful internal and external customer service regardless of the circumstances. Must remain calm, flexible, and willing to see other perspectives. Provides recognition and support to both staff and volunteers for their individual contributions to our agency. Ensures that every individual who enters/calls our agency is recognized and treated as a potential donor.
  • Animal Intake/Physical Evaluation: Oversee staff to ensure timely, safe and accurate completion of paperwork to admit pets into the shelter and to transfer them out as needed. Become familiar with and model safe and humane animal handling procedures. Assess health and behavior of pet upon intake, determine and execute appropriate humane handling strategies, conduct appropriate tests, and administer appropriate vaccinations/preventatives as necessary. Alert the Veterinary staff to any health problems found during the examination as per KHS standard operating procedures. Set-up animals in the appropriate animal holding area. Enter accurate owner and animal data into Pet Point.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure that the Kansas Humane Society adopts quality physically and behaviorally healthy pet animals by continuously monitoring the physical and behavioral health of all pets in the care of agency. Meet the needs of pets who display signs of physical or behavioral illness accordingly. Provide enrichment and behavior modification for all pets housed at KHS as time permits.
  • Staff and Volunteer Management: Work closely with the Foster Coordinator, clinic staff and Shelter Operations Officers to ensure the best placement and care for animals in need of placement. Assists the Shelter Operations Officers with reviewing and making on-going recommendations on training plans to ensure and oversee continuous development/improvement of staff and volunteers. Utilize KHS volunteers to help with duties as needed and provide appropriate support.
  • New Rescue Agencies: Continually look for new agencies to work with for all species.
  • Record Keeping: Make sure the shelter has accurate records for all rescue agencies. Make sure all fees are collected and contracts signed as needed and stored in accordance to state regulations.
  • Phone Calls/Emails: Respond in a timely and professional manner to phone calls and emails received from rescue agencies.
  • Safety: Comply with KHS Safety policies and procedures in order to maintain a healthy and safe environment.
  • Shelter Operations: Assist Shelter Manager with monitoring the efficient movement (flow) of animals through the shelter as well as the behavioral and physical health of animals. Provide a plan for animals that are no longer behaviorally healthy. Be an active participant in the Daily Rounds Committee. Develop daily plans to maximize available space and maintain an acceptable workload capacity. Coordinate the movements of animals with other departments to maximize shelter flow efficiency. Ensure sanitation protocols are followed to the highest standards. Ensure the appropriate precautions and PPE are utilized when an animal presents with illness and injury. Ensure that the animal’s needs are met accordingly. Assist all shelter heads in setting short-term and long-range goals to improve the quality of care of pets while in the care of the Kansas Humane Society. Ensure the safety of staff and animals is top priority by following safety procedures and policies.
  • Certified Euthanasia Technician: Must earn and maintain C.E.T. status according to Kansas Humane Society standards of care. Including but not limited to proper documentation on drug logs, proper handling of controlled substances, humane administration of euthanasia drugs, and proper disposal of pet remains. Must follow and perform basic functions and processes related to the cremation of pets and the disposal of cremains.
  • Resource Management: Serve as steward of KHS resources. Utilize staff, volunteer and monetary resources effectively. Assist the Shelter Manager in the planning process as needed to ensure consistent and smooth flow of animals through our agency. Prioritize to accomplish task(s) that are most critical to the agency. Inventory supplies and anticipate needs for the Rescue Department.
  • Safety Committee: Participate in Monthly meetings, and safety checks. Implement and enforce the safety policies and procedures, in particular, the use of Personal Protective Equipment in the Rescue Department.
  • Training: Assist the Shelter Manager with development and maintenance of training procedures. Implement departmental training for Rescue Staff. Participate in staff training and development opportunities. Participate in special events/projects, and cross training programs.
