About The Position

Resumes are being accepted for the position of Program Coordinator - Recreation with Thorncliffe Park Urban Farmers. This position will focus on engaging the community on private lands including natural areas stewardship, and community gardening. The position will engage community groups and volunteers to deliver outreach and stewardship initiatives in support of the managing of the community gardens and stewardship programs. This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Requirements

  • Be between 15-30 years of age (inclusive)
  • Be Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, or persons on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations
  • Experience in gardening, agriculture, or community development (2+ years preferred).
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture, permaculture, and food sovereignty principles.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers and facilitating group activities.
  • Physical ability to perform outdoor work in all seasons (lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, crouching).
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, due to inability to work in the heat to ensure personal safety.
  • Familiarity with record-keeping, and basic computer skills (Google Docs).
  • Enthusiasm for community engagement and environmental stewardship.
  • Repetitive tasks such as bending, crouching, reaching, and lifting up to 50lbs
  • Full shifts standing and working on your feet
  • Use of hand tools and mechanized equipment
  • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather (heat, sun, rain, cold)
  • Working regular shifts on evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working and volunteering in the Thorcliffe area as Green Team Leaders is preferred
  • Certifications in horticulture, sustainable agriculture, or related fields.
  • Experience with conflict resolution and community organizing.
  • First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily activities, including planting, maintenance, harvesting and distribution of harvest, composting, and maintaining inventory of equipment. Ensure the garden is safe, productive, and welcoming to all participants.
  • Assist with training and supervising volunteers. Foster a sense of community and ownership among participants. Demonstrate and communicate to participants the basic principles of gardening as an educational experience.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of gardening workshops, educational events, and community outreach activities. Collaborate with local organizations and stakeholders to promote the garden’s benefits.
  • Maintain accurate records of garden activities, volunteer hours, and program outcomes.
  • Act as a liaison between gardeners, community members, and available resources. Facilitate communication and encourage inclusive participation.
  • Promote sustainable gardening techniques, environmental stewardship, and food sovereignty initiatives. Integrate culturally relevant practices and advocate for food access and equity.
  • Prepare reports on garden participation, outcomes, and feedback.
