About The Position

This position is for a Professional Writing Center Student Assistant at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee. The role involves working as a front desk receptionist in the Professional Writing Center located at 150 Mass Ave. The Student Employment program at Berklee provides opportunities for students to work part-time on campus, helping them meet living expenses. There are over 900 positions available, typically ranging from 10 to 15 hours per week, with daily opportunities for project-based temporary employment, offering professional and educational growth. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program, or be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester if working in the summer. Other requirements include having a valid U.S. Social Security Number, maintaining valid Visa status (if applicable), a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA (first-semester students are exempt), Federal Work Study eligibility, good disciplinary standing, and being located in the U.S.

Requirements

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee
  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program
  • Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters
  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Remain in “valid” Visa status as applicable
  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester
  • Federal Work Study student may apply
  • In good disciplinary standing
  • Must be located in the U.S.
  • High receptionist skills needed
  • Very high customer service skills needed and ability to deal cordially with people in sometimes stressful high-traffic situations
  • Student must have high command of the English language
  • Student must be highly organized and able to multitask
  • Must be punctual and extremely reliable
  • Must be mature and professional enough to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Answer phones, take detailed messages, answer general division and college-wide related questions, and provide accurate information to and for an extremely high volume of people (128 faculty, chairs and staff plus a high volume of student traffic) at the front desk of the Professional Writing Center in the 150 Mass Ave. building
  • Keep track of the whereabouts and office hours of PWD faculty located in 155 Mass. Ave. offices across the street
  • Contacting faculty for their office hour meetings
  • Refer students to the appropriate Chairs/faculty/locations for office hours, advising hours, various CBX tests, add-drop information, extra-help sessions, etc.
  • Keep track of conference room schedules in the PWD, giving out keys to booked rooms appropriately
  • Be able to relay appropriate information on office hour cancellation, changes in PWMTD operations, and classroom locations in the 150 Mass Ave building
  • Unlock the supply closet, keys, update the whiteboard each morning, turn on lights and open PWC from door if locked at the beginning of shift
  • Lock supply closet, lock up master key, turn off lights, double check if room doors (Rm 208 and 210) are locked, and close PWC door at the end of shift
  • Accept deliveries as needed for Training and Support Office and for Dean of Music Technology Division and his Assistant (as their offices are located in the Writing Center and they do not have receptionist support)
  • Assist with supply inventory and pickup, xeroxing, and miscellaneous duties
  • Keep desk and office space clean and organized
  • Stay informed on Project Band sign-ups information and location for submissions, will no longer be located at 150 Mass Ave, and moving locations to 155 Mass Ave
