About The Position

The City of Oceanside is seeking a talented individual passionate about serving the community through quality sports and recreation programs for the position of Professional Assistant in the Recreation Division. This role will assist with sports and field allocation, embracing change and continuous improvement. The ideal candidate will have past experience in recreation and athletics, be approachable, experienced working with diverse communities, and sensitive to the needs of the City’s unique cultural groups. They should be self-motivated, detailed-oriented, and possess excellent time management skills. This is a temporary, hourly, extra-help position not to exceed 999 hours in a fiscal year, and does not include leave or medical benefits.

Requirements

  • Two years of public sector experience (minimum 2,000 hours).
  • One year customer service experience (minimum 1,000 hours).
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in public administration, business administration, or a closely related field.
  • A current, valid, California driver's license.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City officials, outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform research queries.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures related to athletic field use and recreation programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the administration and operation of the City's sports programs and athletic facilities.
  • Respond to inquiries and process athletic field and facility permits.
  • Coordinate participant registrations and maintain records within the City's registration software system.
  • Create marketing materials and promotional content.
  • Process league paperwork and respond to emails and phone calls related to sports programming.
  • Assist with existing youth and adult leagues, including evening league operations.
  • Develop, coordinate, and oversee youth and adult sports programs and leagues.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to participants, coaches, officials, and user groups.
  • Analyze and define objectives and strategies that are department specific.
  • Investigate and conduct research.
  • Prepare recommendations and propose responses.
  • Advise supervisors on administrative matters within the City.
  • Plan and schedule meetings and conferences.
  • Prepare agendas and related documentation.
  • Coordinate work with divisions, agencies, City staff, and the public.
  • Prepare materials for meetings.
  • Answer phone calls from internal and external customers.
  • Schedule inspections.
  • Assist in fulfilling Public Records Requests.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
