About The Position

The Radioactive Waste Characterization Specialist is a technical position that provides direct support to the Waste Management Supervisor for generation and management of dangerous, radioactive, and mixed waste, to include packaging, characterization, waste certification for disposal. This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control, and supervision of WTCC. Amentum is a global company with a heritage dating back more than 100 years and delivering solutions in nuclear energy, infrastructure, operations and maintenance, and national security. Our predecessors helped build Hoover Dam, protected fighting forces in World War II, and supported the Manhattan Project. Today, our teams clean up legacy nuclear waste around the world, manage the United Kingdom’s defense portfolio, design programs and tests for Navy submarine electronic systems, and provide integrated supply chain services needed in developing countries during the pandemic. Amentum has joined with Bechtel to create an LLC, known as the Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC). Join us as we make history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. We are designing and building a one-of-a-kind facility that will turn radioactive and chemical waste left over from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal. Your efforts will help protect the nearby Columbia River and the communities, salmon, and wildlife along its shorelines throughout the Northwest. Sitting at the confluence of the Columbia, Snake and Yakima rivers near two mountain ranges, our community provides access to year-round outdoor recreation, 300 days of sun a year, more than 200 wineries within a 50-mile radius, and the amenities of large cities just a three-hour drive (or short flight) to Seattle and Portland.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
Eight ( 8) years of experience in areas of radioactive and hazardous waste management under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act ( RCRA), Washington State Department of Ecology (WAC 173-303), and DOE M 435.1
Strong organizational and planning skills required, including the ability to prioritize workloads
Excellent technical writing/editing and verbal communication skills
Must be authorized to work and remain in the United States without Amentum visa sponsorship now or in the future
Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education
Must be able to obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site. (Even if teleworking, must still be able to comply with security requirements to obtain a badge.)

Nice To Haves

Associates Degree in engineering or science or equivalent education desired
Associates Degree in engineering or science may be substituted for two years of experience
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or science may be substituted for four years of experience
A working knowledge of Conduct of Operations is desirable
Previous experience with radioactive waste characterization, mixed waste characterization, treatment, packaging, transportation, and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities
Previous experience with interpretation of analytical data, sample analyses, and, waste designation, planning, treatment, disposal, and profile development
Prior experience with Hanford Site Waste Acceptance Criteria or relevant waste acceptance criteria from other Department of Energy disposal facilities
Formal training related to radioactive, chemical, and mixed waste management, including training in DOT, RCRA, and Washington State regulations

Responsibilities

Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, other personnel, facilities, and the environment
Perform all work in compliance with environmental permits and regulations
Maintain knowledge of radioactive waste management requirements found in DOE M 435.1, Radioactive Waste Management Manual
Maintain knowledge of environmental regulations, RCRA regulations and Washington State Dangerous Waste regulations (WAC 173-303)
Provides technical support services to the Waste Management organization for management of radioactive, chemical, and mixed waste-generating activities
Assists the SME in development and execution of effective radioactive, chemical, and mixed waste characterization strategies
Develops radioactive, chemical, and mixed waste management plans, sampling and analysis plans, data quality objectives, and packaging and disposal pathways
Supports development and maintenance of waste management program documentation, including institutional and activity level procedures
Interfaces with other organizations in support of waste characterization activities and methodologies, including laboratory personnel, Plant Engineering, and Process Engineering organizations
Maintains the lead role in providing detailed and accurate radioactive, chemical, and mixed waste characterization data for waste disposal
Maintains knowledge of applicable waste simulation and composition modeling tools and techniques, and interprets modeling tool outputs for waste characterization and waste designation
