We are currently hiring a part-time Production Roaster for our Dawson Taylor team in Boise. The primary function of the Production Roaster is for roasting coffee daily, applying roasting quality control protocols, and maintaining roasting equipment and facilities in clean and working order. As a member of the production team, this position is responsible for labelling bags, bagging coffee, packing orders, preparing shipments, stocking inventory, sanitizing the production facility and common spaces, and other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
  • Experience with Specialty Coffee required.
  • Keen appreciation for coffee and ability to accurately distinguish different coffee tastes and aromas.
  • Interest in and commitment toward developing understanding of the roasting process and Specialty Coffee culture.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks consistently and with attention to detail.
  • Excellent computation, math, and computer skills.
  • Ability to visually examine products for quality, freshness, and accurate labeling.
  • Reliability is paramount; must demonstrate flexibility to meet production and roasting demands.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, adapt, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work without direction and solve problems appropriately and independently.
  • Passionate about producing a quality product.
  • Physical activities: climbing, stooping, kneeling, balancing, crawling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motion.
  • Physical requirements: Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); and/or using measurement devices.
  • The worker is frequently required to taste and smell coffee for evaluation purposes.
  • The worker will occasionally be required to taste coffee.
  • The worker is subject to indoor environmental conditions.
  • The worker is subject to extreme heat.
  • The worker is subject to noise.
  • The worker is subject to hazards, including proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, and/or exposure to high heat.
  • The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions.
  • The worker is frequently in close quarters and other areas that could cause claustrophobia.
  • The worker is required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • The worker may be required to work more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience roasting coffee 1-2 years in a coffee roasting facility, but will consider home roasters and self-taught passionate coffee lovers.
  • Previous experience in physical and sensorial coffee quality control preferred.
  • Previous experience working in production and handling/packing coffee products is preferred.
  • Mechanical/Electrical skills highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Roasting coffee consistently, efficiently, and to current standards on San Franciscan SF-25 and SF-75 roasters
  • Attention to detail while using the roast logging system to log green coffee and use inventory management system to record roasted coffee
  • Participating in coffee cuppings, espresso labs, and other quality control activities and continuing education as necessary
  • Regular cleaning of roasting equipment and cleaning of roasting facility
  • Labeling, filling, sealing, folding, and packing coffee bags.
  • Pulling and packing orders for shipping and delivery.
