About The Position

Under general supervision, monitors, regulates, conducts field inspections and controls operations of the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) production and transmission system, including pumping stations, rate of flow stations, reservoirs and other storage facilities, to meet potable water delivery requirements to SNWA purveyors at the lowest possible cost; monitors water quality instrumentation and takes actions to ensure that water deliveries meet all applicable water quality standards and compliance requirements; and performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Six years of journey-level operator experience at a 20 MGD or larger potable water treatment plant.
  • Nevada State driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s Vehicle Insurance Policy.
  • Nevada State Department of Environmental Protection Water Distribution Operator II Certification, or a comparable certification from AWWA or another state.
  • Nevada State Department of Environmental Protection Water Treatment Operator I Certification.
  • Completion of Hazard Waste Response Certification within one year from date of hire.
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk; talk or hear in person; distinguish alarms and equipment operating sounds; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; smell; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands or arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Required to wear respirators regularly.
  • Use oral and written communication skills.
  • Read detailed technical documents or instructions.
  • Analyze and solve problems.
  • Continuously observe and interpret conditions, situations, data and information.
  • Use math and mathematical reasoning.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor’s degree with a major in chemistry, public health, or sanitary, chemical or civil engineering is highly desirable and may be substituted for up to four years of the required experience.
  • A Water Treatment Operator II Certification is desirable, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors, regulates, conducts field inspections and controls operations of the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) production and transmission system, including pumping stations, rate of flow stations, reservoirs and other storage facilities, to meet potable water delivery requirements to SNWA purveyors at the lowest possible cost.
  • Monitors water quality instrumentation and takes actions to ensure that water deliveries meet all applicable water quality standards and compliance requirements.
  • Operates a wide variety of pumping, treatment, control and transmission equipment, including digital control equipment.
  • Accurately monitors, reads and interprets the significance of SCADA system displays and controls and takes appropriate action in accordance with standard operating procedures and instructions from other operators and supervisors.
  • Forecasts water demand and calculates power requirements for operations of the treatment, production and transmission systems.
  • Conducts field inspections of transmission equipment and facilities to identify maintenance and repair requirements.
  • Coordinates maintenance and repair activities with technicians in the field while monitoring and operating the transmission system.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools used in the work.
  • Accurately reads and understands valve books, blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Maintains records and prepares clear and concise records and reports.
  • Understands and follows oral and written instructions.
  • Communicates effectively in writing and orally.
  • Remains calm and takes appropriate action in emergency situations.
  • Completes on-site water quality sampling to ensure site/system equipment is reading accurately and properly calibrated.
  • Establishes and maintains effective relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
