About The Position

The Production Grinder is responsible for removing gating material, and blending and grinding casting surfaces to meet customer specifications. This role involves ensuring that all grinding and blending is performed within dimensional tolerances, removing only the necessary amount of metal. The position also emphasizes adherence to safety protocols and may involve minor maintenance tasks and training of other personnel.

Requirements

  • Grinding skills and working knowledge of grinding tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to follow instructions, read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and follow specifications on Tech Cards.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing thirty to fifty pounds and occasionally up to eighty pounds.
  • Ability to work in difficult working conditions, including exposure to noise, dust, temperature extremes, and other elements for extended periods.
  • Compliance with Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division Personal Protective Equipment standard for Respiratory Protection and Oregon Health Division Rules for the Control of Radiation may be required.
  • If a tight-fitting respirator is required, facial hair, temple pieces on glasses, or other items that interfere with the face-to-face piece seal of the respirator are not permitted.

Responsibilities

  • Grind and blend gating and defect areas on castings to meet surface finishing specifications and dimensional tolerances.
  • Remove the minimum amount of metal necessary to remain within specified tolerances.
  • Review tech cards and blueprints to determine grinding requirements and acceptance limits.
  • Use various grinding tools (belt grinders, fixed grinders, hand grinders, air tools, hand tools) and files to grind and polish casting areas.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, including shields, clothing, wrist supports, glasses, and gloves.
  • Visually inspect castings during grinding to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Perform dimensional measurements on specified parts to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Adhere to plant and department safety rules.
  • Safely operate all equipment and tools.
  • Identify and report safety problems.
  • Handle hazardous waste as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance and change belts on equipment.
  • Complete logs and records.
  • Perform other tasks as directed.
  • Provide training and work direction to B-level grinders.
