A production editor serves in a variety of capacities to prepare editorial content for Hearst Newspapers print editions. This includes page layout and section organization, wire news decision-making, copy editing for print, page editing (including headline and caption writing, photo selection, and trimming stories to fit), proofing pages, and typesetting pages in time for deadline. Depending on the size of the newspaper and depth of editing, the production editor may perform all tasks for a page, set of pages, or a section, or play one or two roles on a section or set of pages. Production editors will often serve in one or two roles for part of a shift and in other roles for another part of the shift. Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to vary the depth of editing and finishing are crucial for this role. This role will primarily focus on editing and presenting sports news for Hearst papers throughout Texas, with a special focus on Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. Sports journalism is a necessary specialty skill for success, as is the ability to work in other parts of the operation outside of sports.
