About The Position

The Product Policy team at OpenAI is responsible for creating, implementing, and enforcing policies that govern the use of OpenAI's services, including ChatGPT, GPTs, the GPT Store, Codex, and the OpenAI API. This role specifically focuses on developing policy approaches that enable innovative and responsible AI use, with a particular emphasis on youth. The position will shape the Product Policy's strategy for youth's engagement with AI, supporting investments in safe, age-appropriate, and beneficial experiences for young people across all platforms. Key areas include learning, education, and age-appropriate experiences. The role involves cross-functional collaboration with product, research, integrity, safety, and operations teams to understand youth needs, anticipate risks, and prevent misuse. This role is based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid work model requiring three days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered, and travel is required.

Requirements

  • Expertise in youth technology, education, or young people's experiences with digital products, particularly as they relate to AI.
  • Strong understanding of the youth and AI policy landscape.
  • Ability to translate expertise into clear, practical guidance for product teams and company leadership.
  • 4+ years of experience in youth technology, trust and safety, policy, research, education/ed tech, child development, or a related field, with exposure to how technology platforms manage youth-related risks.
  • Specific and deep experience with product work, partnering with technical teams to shape responsible and age-appropriate product development.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with product managers, engineers, researchers, policy experts, and executives.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a proactive approach to taking initiative ('zero to one').
  • Creative thinking with an eye for leveraging data, research, and user insights to inform policy.
  • Understanding of how young people, families, educators, civil society, governments, enterprise customers, and other stakeholders perceive youth use of and experiences with AI.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining policy frameworks for how OpenAI products are designed, launched, and operated for youth, covering aspects like age-appropriate experiences, access, privacy, learning, wellbeing, content, and family involvement.
  • Partnering cross-functionally with Product, User Ops, Legal, Safety, Integrity, Research, Communications, and Global Affairs to align on youth needs, risks, product launches, incident response, and external commitments.
  • Translating policy into practical implementation standards, product requirements, enforcement protocols, and escalation paths for engineering, operations, integrity, and trust and safety teams.
  • Identifying opportunities to use data, research, expert input, and feedback from young people and families to inform and improve policy work.
