Product Engineer

HealthspanSanta Monica, CA
$185,000 - $200,000Remote

About The Position

Healthspan is seeking an engineer to build the surfaces through which their digital health services are delivered. This is not a traditional frontend role, but rather for an engineer who treats the product surface as a craft problem. The engineer will be part of the engineering team, reporting to the CTO, and collaborating closely with the project manager. The role involves taking designs, handling edge cases independently, and using AI as a significant productivity multiplier. The code written will impact various parts of the product, including the patient portal, intake flows, lab interpretation surfaces, provider tools, marketing site, and internal operations dashboards. The engineer will be responsible for shipping components, polish, integration work, and AI features within the product itself.

Requirements

  • Fluent with TypeScript, React, Next.js, Tailwind.
  • Comfortable with auth, APIs, and deploys.
  • Ability to read a Figma file precisely and complete the thinking when the file runs out.
  • Proven experience operating at native AI speed, using tools like Cursor, Claude Code, MCP.
  • Experience shipping agents and AI features in production.
  • Ability to 'just build it' when a tool is missing.
  • Demonstrated 5-10x throughput compared to a year ago.
  • Strong individual contributor who collaborates well with a team.
  • Ability to take a design and brief and execute without constant scope renegotiation.
  • Experience shipping visible work at a real company with real users (e.g., a product surface, AI feature, internal tool, or flow with metrics).
  • Experience in healthcare, DTC, or industries where conversion and trust are critical is a bonus.
  • A feel for product copy, able to write simple, brand-consistent copy for elements like button labels or empty states.
  • Ability to quickly become rigorous about longevity science.

Nice To Haves

  • Portfolio looks good — not generic-AI good, actually good.
  • Experience in healthcare, DTC, or anywhere conversion and trust both matter.

Responsibilities

  • Take designs and ship them in code at production quality, on the timeline scoped with the PM, balancing speed and craft.
  • Handle edge cases without blocking, making defensible calls for uncovered states (empty, error, loading, unusual data) and shipping them.
  • Use AI tools (Cursor, Claude Code, MCP, in-house agents) as a force multiplier to achieve high throughput.
  • Build AI features within the product, such as lab interpretation drafts, patient-facing explainers, intake summarization, and internal automations, with a strong understanding of AI limitations and human oversight.
  • Contribute to product decisions by understanding the 'why' behind features, pushing back when necessary, and suggesting cost-effective, high-quality alternatives.
  • Maintain a high standard of craft for patient-facing surfaces to ensure they feel premium and trustworthy, and internal tools feel fast.
  • Handle HIPAA compliance by being mindful of audit trails, role-based access, error handling, and secure data flows, without needing to be a compliance expert.

Benefits

  • Equity commensurate with the scope
  • Autonomy of a much smaller company
  • A CTO, PM, design, and clinical team that respects the craft and will give you room to run
  • Compensation that reflects the value of an engineer achieving high throughput
