Product Engineer, AI Enablement

Ultra•Brooklyn, OH

About The Position

Ultra is hiring a Product Engineer, AI Enablement to build and roll out tools that help the company use AI effectively. The role works with engineering, operations, deployment, data, people, and other teams to understand existing work, identify opportunities for AI, and create reliable internal tools and workflows. The position is part of the Software team, alongside infrastructure and developer productivity. Its scope includes both software development practices—such as coding agents, review, testing, repository context, and CI—and tools and automations that help the rest of the company work. The engineer will build reusable approaches that enable teams to create their own workflows. This is a production software role involving evaluation of commercial tools, integrating effective solutions, building missing capabilities, measuring adoption, and discontinuing tools that do not prove useful. It is an in-person role in New York City.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals and ability to ship quickly across backend services, internal tools, integrations, automation, and interfaces, using Python and/or TypeScript.
  • Experience shipping agentic systems or LLM-powered tools used by real people, and ability to explain their failure modes.
  • Fluency with modern AI coding tools and strong views on how they should be used.
  • Ability to decide when to build, buy, or use a conventional script instead of an agent.
  • Treat evaluations, permissions, secrets, and safe rollout as integral parts of the product.
  • Ability to work with non-engineers and turn ambiguous workflows into scoped, useful solutions.
  • Clear writing and comfort driving adoption in addition to writing code.
  • Around four or more years of production software experience is a reasonable bar; demonstrated experience shipping this kind of system is more important than the number of years.

Nice To Haves

  • Former startup founder.
  • Experience building self-improving agentic systems that eventually ran without direct involvement.
  • Strong product sense and knowledge of user experience in human-in-the-loop systems.
  • Experience redesigning a business workflow and measuring the improvement, rather than merely automating the existing process.

Responsibilities

  • Own AI tooling adoption across Ultra: identify where AI can improve velocity, build or integrate solutions, teach colleagues to use them, and drive adoption.
  • Build the internal AI stack, including services, workflows, interfaces, model integrations, and agent infrastructure.
  • Make agents effective and trustworthy in Ultra’s codebase and systems through context, tool access, review, testing, and CI.
  • Partner with operations, deployment, data, and business teams to develop useful workflows and hand off maintainable systems with clear owners.
  • Build reusable connectors, shared context, templates, examples, and guardrails so others can extend shipped tools.
  • Evaluate AI tools and determine what Ultra should adopt, combine, or build.
  • Partner with infrastructure and security teams to provide AI tools with useful access while managing risk.
  • Measure adoption, productivity, and user trust; expand successful tools and discontinue unsuccessful ones.
