Product Design Engineer (UI)

OptimismNewport Beach, CA
$110,000 - $140,000Hybrid

About The Position

Optimism is a modern media and technology platform focused on well-being, operating a family of brands across health, wellness, and longevity. They are building a design-driven organization where taste, clarity, and trust define the user experience. This role is for a Product Design Engineer (UI) to join their central design team, focusing on Optimism and its ecosystem of brands and products. The position is at the intersection of design and development, requiring the ability to design elegant interfaces, build them, launch them, test performance, and continuously refine them. The role is deeply rooted in interface design, systems thinking, and user experience across digital surfaces, including email, web, and internal tools within the O Platform. UI is seen as a critical layer for building trust, with every interaction being an opportunity to create clarity, guide behavior, and deepen connection. This role will help define the platform's feel at scale, integrating design, data, and human experience.

Requirements

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in UI, product design, digital design, front-end experience design, or related fields.
  • Experience translating designs into live digital experiences, with comfort moving between design and implementation.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating exceptional UI craft across web, email, product, or interactive experiences.
  • Familiarity with modern front-end tools and workflows (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, React, Framer, Webflow, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of front-end constraints and component-based thinking.
  • Strong understanding of layout, typography, hierarchy, interaction design, and conversion-focused UX.
  • Experience designing within scalable systems and frameworks (design systems, component libraries, modular systems).
  • Experience with email design systems and ESP constraints (responsive templates, modular builds, dynamic content, etc.).
  • Proficiency with Figma, Webflow, WordPress, and ESPs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience from media platforms, content products, subscription businesses, or newsletter ecosystems.
  • Understanding of data-driven personalization, lifecycle journeys, growth loops, and conversion optimization.
  • Experience with motion and interaction design.
  • Experience designing editorial or content management interfaces.
  • AI-forward approach, leveraging tools to accelerate design exploration, workflows, prototyping, and ideation.

Responsibilities

  • Shaping user experience across every interaction by translating strategy, data, editorial, and product thinking into clear, elegant, high-performing interfaces.
  • Designing high-quality UI across email, web, and product surfaces, ensuring clarity, usability, and visual consistency.
  • Translating user journeys into intuitive and thoughtful interfaces.
  • Moving designs into production, partnering closely with engineering teams or independently implementing front-end experiences.
  • Building and launching digital experiences directly, including landing pages, web experiences, email modules, subscription flows, quizzes, and lightweight product interfaces.
  • Partnering with product, engineering, editorial, and growth teams to implement data-informed design decisions.
  • Contributing to and evolving design systems for scalability across brands and platforms.
  • Designing and optimizing conversion flows (landing pages, quizzes, subscription paths, onboarding journeys, etc.).
  • Creating UI patterns that support personalization and dynamic content experiences.
  • Prototyping rapidly and testing ideas in-market using experimentation to refine UX, performance, engagement, and conversion outcomes.
  • Owning the full iteration cycle: designing, implementing, launching, measuring, revising, and optimizing experiences based on user behavior and performance data.
  • Bridging design systems and front-end implementation for thoughtful, scalable execution.
  • Ensuring design output reflects Optimism’s core principles and human-centered thinking.
